Last night i was hanging out with my Deaf friends and several came over that i had never met before. I was talking to some one on my sk and i heard a friend laugh so i looked up and she looked at me and said, OMG he thought you are Deaf!!:jaw: I said WHAT?? He said i just figured you never went to FSDB! Wow that was cool that a Deaf person thought i was Deaf too. Later i was chatting with some people and my cell phone rang so i took the call. One of the girls there said WHAT?? HE IS HEARING??? (granted i was the only hearing there) So i thought WOW another!! Then later my friend was telling another guy how i learned so quick and blah blah and that guy said..... HE IS HEARING?? My friend laughed and said wow you are the 3rd person tonight to think he is Deaf. Then some one had to rain on my parade and say oh it is obvious he is hearing! BLAH!!! oh well i take it as a great compliment that the other Deafies thought i was as well since i only started signing a few months ago! Very cool feeling last night and had to share with my AD folks! :cool: :laugh2: :dance2: :applause: :rockon:

So means your signing skills are going better than u thought, huh? :) Strange that a lot of deaf people think I am hearing. LOL!
 
Yup, me too, even though I am Deaf, some ask if I am hearing or an interpreter. Ughhhhh!
 
Wow am glad that not only me some deaf people think am hearing too, and one deaf person keep ask me 'Are you sure you Deaf?' i said yes am deaf and i ask this her why? and she said because ' i see you speak well with other hearing people '. and again she keep say i believe you hearing i went say oh no it true that am deaf since birth, she said how come see me talked to my hearing daughter i often not use sign to my daughter i just automatic to speak talk to my daughter,
And i explain to her that i am very good use lipreading, also am acting as Relay and Back-up interpreter for my job.
One time i remember long time ago one hearing student of my friend's who was the tutor of British Sign Language, One day i went to my friend's for BBQ party at her garden, i was used signs to other friends who are deaf also hearing too who can use signs either. and this one hearing student of my friend's said to me ' Are you hearing ? used her basic level BSL and i replied in sign to her said no am deaf .. and she sign back to me said i thought you are hearing as i see you talk as speak good.
And because my mom used to teached me how to speak when i was little and before send me to the boarding school for the deaf my mom taught me to speak and it was 40 words i was only 4 years old.
But interesting me i have notice myself that i am not very good at english writing grammar, because of the poor educationed i received from the boarding school for the deaf.

Yea I get a good expression from ppl thought I was hearing but not I am hoh and I can speak well just like hearing. Oh well, I had to speak no ASL when I went to deaf school for 7 yrs, that sucks. But my ASL have improved once I went to NTID. :D
 
Yeah but for me it is extra cool, because i never knew a Deaf person before May and started learning sign in August. I think now i won't be so hard on myself if people think that, and that i just was mainstreamed all my life. I take it as a high compliment especially because of how short a time i sign! =)
 
Congrats Southern! I'm hearing too and only can hope to get to that point.

BTW, I like your picture you have up. :)

I can still remember the first compliment I received from a Deaf person about my signing. I started learning tactile sign only a few months earlier, so I was still pretty nervous about signing with others. When this person told me how well I signed, I was elated! I don't think I'll ever forget that moment and how great it made me feel. :)

I've had two deaf people ask if I was deaf... I'm not that great of a signer either... hmmm.

I still think that is sooo odd cuz I get the opposite and I am deaf! LOL! I am happy for u and Southern if your signing skills are improving to this point.
 
Well I have been asked if I was deaf but I think more because my signing was off. I think that the person thought I was hearing so they asked. This was different these people thought I am Deaf and were shocked to find that I am hearing. Which was really cool. My friend told me that there are all levels of knowledge of ASL in the Deaf community and you come across people all the time who are Deaf that do not sign well for what ever reason.

Thanks Shel. And I have improved quickly. It seems I have a mind for it. My hearing friends when learning that I know sign and am going to classes for it say it makes sense because I am such an “animated” person anyway. That probably helps. My mind really takes sign unlike other languages I have taken. Plus I love it!! =)

That is true about how differently each individual learns another language. Glad u love it.
 
My brother is very good with German and loves it. me, not so much but we each like what we like. And i have always thought ASL is cool. I used to stare at Deaf people signing because i thought it was cool. Watched documentary on Gally before i ever met a Deaf person. Maybe there was something there all along and i just didn't realize it. =)
