Please pardon my ignorance on the subject. But if I were wanting to get a deaf person's attention from across the room, what is considered polite and courteous to get their attention? I found myself in a dilemma tonight when I was attempting to get my instructor's attention. I ended up snapping out of habit. :Oops:

To me, it really doesn't matter as long they don't bang on the table or tag my shoulder hard enough to get my attention....

Waving to a deaf person to get their attention seems to be more polite even though it might get the others attention too, so then they will all have their eyes on ya!!....If it was all the hottie girls then you would be the luckiest man on earth! :laugh2:

btw, Cheri loves to snapped her fingers to get my attention, Gosh I hate that!

Stomping on the grounds. I do that at my husband's home because his house is raised on a platform so you can stomp ANYWHERE in the house and he will know that I want his attention in another room. :)

The worst thing you can do is to throw a pen or a ball of paper... SO stupid and embarassed. [After getting hit by a pen] "WHAT THE FUCK...[hearing people gasped at the fact that a Deaf person can swear so CLEARLY] oh, what do you want, you little... *mumbling*?"

[edited: You also can wave your hands. One student in eighth grade was SO impressed by my ability to see her waving her hands out of corners of my eyes even though she was like in back of the classroom while I was all way up front... and she kept doing it over and over yet she got nothing to say to me whenever I signed to her: "What do you want?" Her: "You can SEE me waving to you?! Wow..." Oy. Eventually I ignored her waving her hands and the teacher caught her and told her to quit fooling around. :giggle: Embarassed herself...!]

Snappings fingers has become a bad habit because of work. We have to snap to get floor support's attention. Before I worked there, I couldn't even snap at all. Now I'm better then most black women.

Hmm. When I wave, I tend to flail. :Oops:
 
Don't try to wave your hands at Angel, I've done that she never pays attention! Just throw a rock at her, that's the only way she would look. :whistle:


With me, I have very good eyes, If you trying to wave at me from the sideways, I could noticed. Whatever you do, don't bang your feet on the ground nor bang your fist on a table, It annoyed me. Hope you taking notes. :giggle:

Dorkette, I'll be honest with you. Throwing a pen or paper was my first inclination. I figured it was even more polite if you hit in the cephalic region or excessive velocity. I was wrong again. Sowwy. :crazy:
 
I have a Deaf friend who works in construction. His coworkers throw nails at his hardhat to get his attention.

I am not recommending that method for you.

:werd: Gnarlydorkette is correct, I work for my dad at the rib cook-offs and when someone working up front and trying to get my sister and my attention when placing an order, they will sometimes throw food at us to get our attention....

I was at the cutting table, trying to cut the freaking beef which was frozen, and this guy who was working in the middle by serving the food for the customer, he was trying to get my attention while I was chopping the beef up, which he had a nerved to throw a bbq rib bone at me to get my attention, damn I swear my a@@ off at him, I told him if he ever did it again, Ill stick the bone up his a@@!! After that happened, he never did it again!....

I don't think stomping on the grounds is that bad. I do understand if somebody do it too MUCH... just stomp on the ground twice and wait for the Deaf person to look.

One hearing guy had a crush on me but annoyed the hell out of me because he kept kicking the back of my chair or pulled my hair to get my attention (he sat right behind me)... So no pulling hair or kicking the chair! :nono:

Or get a laser and beam onto the board so the deaf person can see it in front of him/her... DO NOT BEAM onto a deaf person to risk the possibilty of blinding him/her! I remembered a hearing student did use a laser beam to beam onto a math teacher while he was droning... the red dot was scattered all over his white hair and the whole classroom laughed but the teacher didn't even caught the fact that he was being "targeted"... lol. Man, the eighth grade was the best year...

Matter of fact he threw a pieces of rib meats at me, and it was stuck on my hair all day, I didn't even notice until I went back to the hotel after closing and recovered a pieces of rib meats on my hair!

ROFL! That is so true! You are speaking of Gary, He has no respect for deaf people, He thinks he can throw anything he wants to get our attention. One time he threw a dirty towel right in my face, Oh wasn't I pissed?!
 
Most people would just tap me on the shoulder or sometimes my back. :) But I have been thrown at by a small object (a wad of paper or a paperclip) once in a while to get my attention too.
One lady at my department likes to snap her fingers to get my attention, but I feel it's annoying. I don't mind people tapping me on the shoulder or my back...it's the best way to get my attention. :)
 
my boss

My boss is deaf at the relay center, and we just flicker the light switch and he knows we need his attention :) he says thats the best way. He also tells us to stomp out feet, cuz he can tell then too. Some people may not like it but it works great for him.

Does your instructor wear a hardhat? :)
(BTW, construction nails are not blunt objects; they are pointy.)

Foot stomping doesn't work good around here because many of the buildings are on concrete slabs and carpeted; there is no vibration.

All my middle school laser pointer memories came rushing back into my head. Thanks, dorkette! That might be a good investment down the line.

Another ignorant question. :Oops: Is stomping your foot effective at all? As in, are the vibrations that apparent?

He sounds like a very rude guy!! I would've been mad if he did stuff like that to me. I hope you two can find a way to get him to stop and be more respectful.
