It is ridiculous that she is upset about this when she clearly does not identify as Deaf....
The fact that she tries using data and did not bother to read it... or her attempt to misconstrue it for her own purpose is sadly common...
The only think I would even call close to agreeing with is the state being able to force parents... however, almost every legitimate study done proves that ASL improves Deaf children's education yet parents still drink the kool-aid that is handed to them so someone can profit...

Well the thing is, why should a parent chose to LIMIT their kids? Yes, if a kid is introduced to ASL, and decides not to sign (like the way Meg did) then that's OK. But why willingly LIMIT access to ASL or any other specialized tool such as Braille? 99.9% of the time when people whine about specialized methodolgies, they just don't like the fact that it reminds them that their kid is indeed different and requires specialized tools.education and accomondations.

Have to agree here... it is one of the few answers I can come to that explain why, with so much unbiased research that proves the benefits of giving access to not only sign but the deaf community, that parents continue to listen to doctors and the like that say otherwise.

no we don't, but we can imagine - as any deaf and ASL-only person, with great difficulties not as smooth as with the help of an interpreter.
I am not saying it's something to ashamed of, I am saying it's just a fact of our life we all gotta admit.

Just as is obvious that the person who wrote the article about Nyle has no clue what is like to be deaf and Deaf.

I am one of those who believe deaf children should be given access to both hearing and deaf world, meaning if the child is born deaf then should be implanted and taught speech and how to hear, but also equally taught ASL and given access to the Deaf Culture.
because, after all, the CI is not a cure-all - just a more sophisticated HEARING AID, that's all.

people who use ASL CAN and DO interact in society without the help of others...ever damn day, all the time,

hint.
i use ASL every day all the time, and i interact with people ,with no help from anyone. voice off!! as almost ever Deafie i know does,
i rarely use terps. besides dealign with the bugerment.

we want to know...

sign should be the first language for Deaf...not a language we cant perceive or only partially...
play on our strengths!
we are visual,

this whole after all nonsense doesn't float. your dismissing the damage ci does as a technology of normalization and assimilation on our culture. your dismissing the practices regarding it by the industry that pushes it. we view it far more then a more sophisticated hearing aid, we view it as frankly what it is
the colonization of our bodies..developed and maintained by multi nationals with the goal to rid the world of people like us.

when it comes to ci, the technology differs deafness doesn't cure it, but the goal is to cure it, and that is how they make statements to the press about ci. regarding "Deafness cured'....."a world with no Deaf".....

Not really. I mean if you are fluent in written English, you can function without a 'terp.

yes, but writting takes a lot of time. and not everyone will want to write back.

I've never had that experience. It's rare that I need to write, but when I do, I condense it and it doesn't take long. I've never had anyone not willing to write back. That would just be weird.
 
anyway, back to Nyle - ten why is he promoting bilingualism? - what does exactly bilingualism means for the deaf?,
and wouldn't be bilingualism be easier to learn with the help of CI for the severely deaf?

Sadly I do sometimes, for the fact that some people are illiterate :doh: :eek3: some just flat out refuse, or can't find the piece of paper or pen etc

I find I get much better willingness to write if I come prepared with pen and paper.

That is true. however, sometimes you leave home not planning to do anything in particular, and forgets to take 'stationery' with you.
