Printer quit printing black ink :(

I tried the photo printiing function. It seems to print the photos in black ink but not text in black ink. The printer has two separate black ink cartridges--one for photo (photo paper), and one for text (regular paper).

It's the black text ink that doesn't work, and I've changed that twice with new cartridges.

I'll wait until TCS comes back and let him mess with the printheads if he wants to. I can't waste any more time on this. I have get my school work done. I spent almost an entire day on this printer, and I'm burned out.

Reba, I used to repair printers.

Printheads are very easy to replace.. I remember being amazed that people would pay us to repace their printheads when I know they could do it themselves.

If you are using Genuine HP ink cartridges and already tried replacing it, I would suggest getting printhead and replacing that. It does come with instructions if I recall correctly. If not, It is on internet.

I would gladly guide you through it if you wish. Just send me a private message.
Thank you. I'll wait until TCS comes home. Probably Thursday he'll be able to do it. He's better at the mechanical stuff because I can't maneuver my hands so well.

Yes, I always use Genuine HP ink.

What causes printheads to fail?

Bad ink but if you use Genuine HP ink then that is most likely not the problem.

I personally would never buy cheap ink again after seeing what I've seen during my printer repair days.

Printheads can go bad due to age and/or use. It is designed to be replaced after a time or use like oil change in car.

Sadly, my printer broke again after 2.5 years. :(

I stick with Laser printers. Their toner don't dry up nor even shorten life.
Overall price on both types of printer is about the same... Yes Toners can be expensive but it last long time, and don't dry up when not using for long period of time. Ink does better than when it was 10 years ago but still long way to go.

I have a laser black-print-only printer for documents but there are times I need to print color documents or photos, so I need the Photosmart for that.

Interesting.

Update:

The printer started printing the black ink again! I have no idea why. So, for now, it's OK. We'll see if it lasts. :hmm:

I think you will end up replacing the printerhead. :) Sounding more like it each time.
