When Being A Stay-At-Home Mom Isn't A Choice

Childcare is just so damn expensive! I pay $420 a month for before and after care for my son. That's why I am seriously thinking of taking the job that I was recently offered because I don't have to go to work until 8:50 am and I get off at 3:50. My son starts school at 8 am so I wont need daycare. Very tempting to take it...
 
Yeah I agree that childcare;s costs were crazy. We were deep debts when we sent our kids to the daycare. Actually, I did not want to quit my job becasue kdis would go to school like 5 years, but for my two kids, so up to 7 years, between their ages and they go to school. I still have my job, and we are recovering our debts from the expensive daycare. :ugh3: The reason is that i refuse to quit my job becasue i need my retirement in the future that i dont want to depend on my hubby's pension. No way.

Not only that, I didn't want to become 100% dependent on a man for income. I saw the hell my mom went through when she was 100% dependent on my dad and then getting divorced with two small children and a house mortgage with no job skills. Not for me...no way.

However, my teaching job couldn't support me and a house these days anyway so I am somewhat dependent on my husband's income to have a roof over my head. Sad isn't it?
 
It's sad and some mothers end up taking their kid(s) to work with them. I went out with my daughter and granddaughter for lunch and one of the waitress had her daughter with her she was about the same age as my granddaughters and the girl came right over and sat at our table and her mother did nothing . We the girl stay until our meal came and told her to leave. The mother was very uptight about my daughter and me complaining , we did not say anything but I did not go out to babysit some kid. We knew it had to tough for the mother not being able to afford a babysitter but she should had told her daughter not to bug people that came there to eat. The mother was not our waitress , the whole thing was very awkward . I bet some people may not had let the girl stay at their table at all. I did think it was very odd the mother would allow her child to go right to strangers the way she did.
 
As a side note, when I first read the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about mothers that wanted to stay home and couldn't afford to!

My niece works and her hubby stays home with the baby. They didn't want to put her in daycare. Her job pays more, better benefits etc. So far it has worked out great for them.

When they can't afford to make a choice to stay home. In other words the choice to stay at home in not available to them because they cannot afford to quit their job/profession.
 
Even as long ago as when friends of mine where raising two kids they worked different shifts to avoid daycare. I do not know how much was economic and how much was not wanting to use daycare. At that time, he was with the groundcrew at Ozark Airlines and she was an RN working in a hospital.

That sure is strange. I'm surprised that her boss allowed that.

I can see that interpretation, too.

It could mean that some women don't have the option ("choice") of staying at home because they must work.

Thank you, Reba. That is what I thought was clear from what I said.
 
WOW it is hard to realize how many years ago it was but our currant church secretary was persuaded to come back after her third daughter was born with the inducement of letting her daughter come along and play in the nursery while mom worked. That arrangement is long since passed as the daughter just graduated from college!
