My last laptop broke; I just got a new replacement, and it's the exact same kind as the last one.

That leads to a curious question.... how many of you have had to overhaul a laptop to make it meet YOUR needs and to your liking? The replacement laptop means I do get my ntouch PC back, and with that, discovering I can make my own contact cards from Sorenson VRS and print them, which is kinda awesome.

My biggest recommendation is stop using explorer. I saw on another post you upgraded from IE7 to IE8....you'll have explorer on your new one, use it look up google chrome or firefox or something, I like chrome but that's me, and then never touch that stupid IE icon ever again.

The End and you're welcome

Actually I use both-- Google Chrome for daily stuff and IE for my VP's, as they can't run without it. :( Be nice if they could.

replaced HDD twice on same laptop, and changed OS once from crappy Vista to Win7 Pro still on it, lappy still going strong...I use Firefox never IE, but Windows has to have it to 'run' stupid i know..but i never use it, same goes for Media player, instead I use VLC, love it, much faster, cleaner

Yikes! I had to re-do installing Google Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, all the VP options I currently have, and plus I'm just starting to understand the value of having IE8-- runs much better than IE7, and I did that mulitple times last year and this year. I've also had to install new VP accounts this year, too, on tablets and laptops, plus upgrade the laptop Internets, and one in particular gave me a run for my money-- this being from 2006, and slower than a snail. That upgrade took nearly 3 hours to complete, and I was glad it was done, as it was nearly 3 AM when I left the place.

nah it's a nice solid C2D lappy...not flaky, i just use it ALOT, like lots
i should be really be using a Desktop
however...

I'd like one for home-- like a Mac, maybe. However, with the amount of travel I do on my feet and various non-airplane methods, I need to have a reliable source of Internet, and I have three: my recently added replacement laptop, my phone (mainly for ntouch mobile purposes), and my tablet (For VP's I need to use in a hurry should that need arise). However, I'm considering upgrading my phone next year, and I've begun to save for one, although I'm not yet sure what I want, but I DO know it must be large enough to fit my hands comfortably-- my ZTE X501 does me no favors with my fat thumbs. Oh well. If I use it sideways, I'll be okay.

I have a cool old Mac clamshell laptop. It weighs a lot but it has that designed look I like. I should see if I can upgrade that thing.

Why not? It still has good life. Plus, if you upgraded, you would benefit a LOT more. Me? I do not know how to set up a home network, but I DO know how to set up a network on a laptop, but for home? That's probably not for me to mess with, but maybe someday, when I have a nice steady job fixing computers and earning a nice living. I can dream, at least. :)

Another suggestion: if you have the original OS and hardware discs, perform a hard reset and reformat your hard drive. Just make sure you have a copy of important files and ALOT of time to burn! I've already tried hard drive and registry cleaners without any obvious results, so if you still have a laptop in working order, that may be something to consider.

I DO have time to burn, but not as much as I would like. Maybe after I get back to Chicago on the 22nd I'll see more? Who knows? All I know right now is that my options for burning time are seriously limited, because I am currently making contact cards for friends and family, and then organizing those.

On my Windows laptops I've only changed batteries and added memory. The only upgrade I did was a few years ago on a netbook, from W7 Starter to Home Premium version. The others don't really need upgrading.

On my Mac I occasionally upgrade the OS but not every time there's a new version.

I use FF on my Windows laptops except for a few college related things that require IE. On my Mac I use Safari.

you know, you should be backing up regularly ( i use a 500GB usb laptop hdd), and i do this like once a month, as i clean up desktop...a nice painless way for ensuring there's back-ups made...not alot of time to burn, learn backing up emails and addresses over time is sure helpful in case an event of a crash or break down

I'm starting to save my documents on a removable flash drive disk that's attached to my key ring where my keys are, and those important enough to save I am saving, since I don't have HDD, and only a mere flash drive, but it is 4 GB, which is more than enough-- for now.

I haven't replace any since 1996, floppy drive still work... all working fine....

And yup..still using dial up connection (mmm...mmm..still waiting to connect)

Added: this is Dell 486 - 100 Mhz 810 MB hard drive, 16 MB Memory, 256 colors VGA....

I'd love to have one of those oldies. Would take me down memory lane from the 1990's-- the days before laptop VP's became a reality.
