Yes, many people do not know that and use the X to mark out the word Christ. I feel if they are doing it for that purpose, then they need to mark out mas, cause it means mass. I guess that is why people say Happy Holidays.

I personally have never known someone to use the X to take the Christ out of Christmas but I have seen people offended that the X was used, assuming that it the X was intended to take the Christ out of Christmas. Bit of a reversal actually.

I always thought people used it because they were lazy and didn't want you wrote the whole thing out :D
