Help! With sentence structure!

You're in ASL classes.... Don't they teach ASL structure in ASL classes? I think they do. I think you could probably do some foot work yourself and find the answers if you just tried a little. Google is your friend.

Don't you think I already would've tried that? Obviously. I said I was confused and needed help, not a smart aleck response. Thanks for the waste of time.

How on earth did I ever pass my ASL classes in the age before the Internet? :giggle:

In fact, we didn't even have DVD's with ASL on them. Shocking!

:D

What do you expect when your very first post here is a request for school work help? You didn't even bother to make an introductory post in Introductions first. Would you just stop a deaf stranger on the street and ask for homework help?

No I probably wouldn't. Good thing this website isn't a street! Your kindness is overwhelming. I'm taking a beginners asl class and have a midterm coming up. I need help with what order I'm supposed to sign. For example: the woman is still speaking to me. Do I sign speak then still or vise versa? And where do I sign the me?

Also, when I sign the question "where is the hearing English man knitting a yellow hat?" What order? Do I sign the man first then say he's English and hearing. I'm so confused!

Any help is appreciated. :)
Well, how did your instructor explain it? What does your textbook say about sentence structure? The answers are there. Also, why did you wait until midterm time to ask about sentence structure?

How much of the work have you done so far? Present what you've done and someone may be willing to tweak it for you.

I must say, that's an odd way of testing ASL. In the classes that I'm familiar with, as both a student and staff member, I've never heard of being given sentences to present ahead of time. Normally, the instructor signs passages to the students as a whole for the receptive portion. Then, the instructor goes one-on-one for the student expressive portion. It's usually presented as a realistic dialogue between the instructor and student. Topics are family, school, work, life experiences, etc. It's not a list of random goofy sentences. Those are OK for practice but they aren't real-life experiences.

That's the thing, she never explained sentence structure. Once she gave us what we were to do on the midterm, it was stuff we never went over in class. The book too doesn't explain sentence structure. I would've done more research before the midterm had I known something we didn't learn was going to be on it. I understand for the most part but I'm confused about when there are several things to describe a person like English and hearing. What order does it go in?

I've done all the work and have no problems remembering the sign it's just the order of sentences. I've always had an interest ASL and want to make sure I do everything correctly. Sorry for the attitude. Just frustrated and was hoping that people would be a little understanding especially when I want to make sure I'm doing things correctly so when I do encounter those who are deaf, we can have meaningful conversations!

Thank you for replying.

I put a lot of the blame on the teachers. Is your teacher a certified ASL instructor? Is your instructor hearing or deaf? What curriculum are you using?

If you can get hold of this book, it will be a huge help to you about ASL grammar. (It's not really for teachers only.)

My teacher is hearing but the class is just not what I expected. I'm pushing through and still expect to learn a lot.

Thank you both so much for your help. It really is greatly appreciated. Both of those seem like great resources for me! Thank you!!

No I probably wouldn't. Good thing this website isn't a street! Your kindness is overwhelming. I wish that I had read this before making my other posts. Wow, what an attitude. I was trying to help you.

If you can take constructive criticism then what are you doing in college?

I've been thru many ASL and interpreting classes and workshops, and have worked in the field. I know what I'm talking about.

It's up to you. Is learning more important to you than your personal sensitivities? If yes, then you should do well. If no, then it will be a continuous struggle for you.

As a Christian, it's my duty to be honest. I try to temper that with a calm attitude. I'm sorry if that didn't come across to you.

afinch, look for a class with a Deaf teacher.

Reba has a lot of experience and knowledge to offer.

Your post is uncalled for. People are trying to help you and guide you with honesty. Reba is right. If you can't take constructive criticism, you are going to have a lot of problems in the future.

a very common misconception. and a very commonly-used phrase as a cheap cop-out to take advantage of them.

I see that you've gone a great length in a vindictive manner. my suggestion for you - drop ASL course. you don't sound like a very hospitable person.

hope it is not your ASL major. If not, then you can drop out the course and take other courses.

It should not be problem.

Woah...what the...? That has absolutely nothing to do with what you're trying to get help on. Posts like that won't get you help at all.

Oh no problem! Anything I can do to help a hearie be lazy and pass their tests they waited to study for! :D Obviously, you've spent little to no time involved in the deaf community. :laugh2:

Reba, no clue how you passed either! Must have been black magic! Heaven forbid students ACTUALLY study and put effort into learning!

Listen here you little ass hat twat waffle, you come onto a deaf site and you jump right in asking for help with your homework, what do you expect? Then you come out and attack a fellow members character because her religion isn't what you think it should be? Because she didn't give you the answers you wanted? I find it hard to believe your teacher just sprung all this on you last minute. I certainly hope you are not an ASL major, because you think my first reply was intense? I can't WAIT for you to have a face to face interaction with a deafie and you go cry yourself to sleep at night. I sure as hell don't want someone like you who makes personal attacks on people like what you just did to Reba, involved with my community in any way. Highly uncalled for you immature little twat waffle. To have to attack someone's religion to back yourself, that just shows you have no intelligence to grasp onto anything else, and you're a presumptuous ass hat. Have fun failing your mid term.

Too bad he got what he wanted and won't be back until he needs something else more than likely.
