That's why my shop always give me a estimate and I signed the paper to authorize the job with the price I'm willing to pay. You get to keep the invoice with estimate they give you. They can't have more than 10% over the estimate that they would charge you. If there is extra repair needed, they must contact you for authorization to do the job.
NEVER sign a blank invoice for the shop.
Definitely avoid Midas shop... they are total dishonest business. I had a family member took their car to the shop for some brakes work. They ended up charging him much more for the other jobs that was not necessary. I had another shop that had Midas do the alignment for them after doing the rack and pinion job...Midas didn't do good job.
Back to the topic... perhaps you could check with BBB for the shop reputation. I normally check BBB or if there is AAA approved car repair shop. There is some honest shops, some not. A simple research would save money and headaches.
