Hard of hearing and tired of asking to repeat

If it's a dishonorable discharge, he's out.

Here some options: Vocational Rehab services, shop around (there's usually no charge for a hearing test but states may vary), get on some kind of payment plan or just live with not hearing. It's pretty cut and dry when you take out the VA. Sorry your tenure with the military ended on sour note.

Other than honourable, not dishonourable. I may get some other type of administrative discharge, I don't know, but a dishonourable is as follows.

"A Dishonorable Discharge, which may only be adjudged through conviction at a General Court-Martial, is reserved for those Soldiers who should be separated under conditions of dishonor after conviction of serious offenses of a civil or military nature."

Never been convicted of anything, I just stopped going in every month, I couldn't take it anymore. Aside from that, I don't want to delve into it.

Well, in that case, you're probably still out of luck because you won't accept help from them anyway. Try the vocational rehab services in your area, worst they can do is say no.

you just "stopped" going. so you're like AWOL? well all I can say is refer to your Army Manual Book and I'm not sure what you're doing is advisable. Maybe seek JAG if possible.

Army is quite notorious for processing paperwork at snail pace.

He's clearly stated that he wants nothing to do with the military. If he's looking for financial assistance, he can't afford the JAG...unless that's a free service but again, he's stated he doesn't want anything to do with them so it's probably a waste of everyone's time.

he already has a contract with them. Army is not interested in what he feels like. you cannot just "not" show up. that's an arrestable offense and a dishonorable discharge. until he is officially discharged... he needs to get his affair in order.

JAG is provided for at no cost. some soldiers can afford to hire a private lawyer. the last thing anybody wants is having a dishonorable discharge in his record. it's just as bad as having a felony criminal record.

Put in a request for your C-File. It contains All your records. You are entitled to that. Go to your county's Veteran Affairs Office. Get a case started for you. A VA Officer will fill out or help you fill out paperwork.

Yeah, THIS. Used to be vets could get a new hearing aid every year! Might still be that way. I knew a man who went HoH in the Army due to participation in intramural boxing and this was in peace time.....and he got a new aid every year.

It's true in my state (not every year though) but the hearing aids my father got from the VA were a piece of crap. Sometimes, you're better off working with an audi outside of government services to get a quality aid that actually works.

Vocational rehab?

I wasn't active duty, so I can't be AWOL. I was a reservist, similar to National Guard, once a month weekend training type deal. You don't get leave in the reserves unless you are on active duty orders and I wasn't.

Vocational rehab?

Yes. This has nothing to do with the military. They help people with physical and hidden disabilities, the elderly, those living at the poverty level, etc. They should be all over the country. In my state though, they're pretty much broke but I imagine they do provide services for people that qualify. You can shoot them an email for info:

Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services

ah ok that gives me a better picture. thank you.

No, Other than Honourable, not dishourable. Is there no other way to get my hearing checked out other than through the VA, you have no idea how much I don't want anything to do with the military or anything even remotely connected to it. I don't care about getting disability pay, I just want to know where my hearing is at right now and protect it so I don't end up totally deaf and unable to enjoy music or sound at all. Nothing agaisnt deaf, just I don't want to lose what I'm sure most deaf people would give anything for. I'm probably wrong on how others view regaining or gaining the ability to hear, so I'll hut up before I offend anyone else.

No, you can get your hearing checked anywhere. Surely there must be an audiologist somewhere near you, or at least closer than Roanoke. It doesn't have to be through the VA. Any audi would do, as far as appeasing your concerns about your hearing loss.

I fail to understand why you would not want help from the VA if your hearing loss is military-related. Doing a C&P through them might classify you with a certain disability percentage that would get you 1) disability pay if you are entitled to it, 2) medical help at low or no cost 2) HA coverage, and more. Why are you throwing in the towel before you even get started?

You mean like an oupatent clinic for the VA? I think there is one near my college. As I said before, I'd rather not deal with the military or anything even remotely connected to the military. As a civilian, how can I get free or very low cost hearing test?

No, the Veterans Service Office . If you're a senior citizen COA may help with the cost . Have you tried rehab ? Costco give free hearing tests, if you look on line there are web sites for free hearing tests. What about your doctor have you ask him or her where you can get free or low cost hearing test ? Some hospitals own by the church give free hearing tests.
you have to be creative start looking on line for low in come hearing tests or call a center for the deaf and hoh in your city . I would not tell them you where a vet as they may tell you call the Veterans Service Office.

In the case of someone who can't afford HAs right now, a "piece of crap," as you so nicely put it, might be better than nothing to someone seeking any form of help.

Yeah, I was just going to say check your local Walmart. About 25% of them up here have a place that gives a free hearing tests. (The other 75% are optometrists)

I just looked at the price of Phonak and if all hearing aids cost that much, then I can't afford them.

As a veteran you might be covered. Also, check with your health plan.

Don't feel bad, most average people cannot afford them.

That is very true . I just saw on the news not long ago a lot of kids where getting free HA because there was no way the parents could afford them. And the ear molds and batteries cost money too. I really think the OP shout try use get help from the Veteran Service Office ,they may be able to made so phone calls on his behave . There are companies that want to help vets out so many a search on line would help. There are so many ways to get help , the OP just have start making phones calls and look on line. He could get a list of places do help people out , the veteran office might have lists of agencies that have nothing to do with the military

I just found this link when I typed in this ' hearing aids for veterans' There was another one but I could not get it open. I know there the Lion Clubs collects eyes glasses maybe the OP could call some clubs in his state and see if they collect HA , it will help until he find get a new one.

It's like asking your ex to do you favours, you could ask, it just isn't something you want to do.

Unless they lowered the age of senior citizens to 23, I don't qualify. The nearest costco is almost 100 miles away one way and I don't know where a rehab place is. I don't have a doctor, I don't medically get checked out in any way shape or form, I can't afford one. But you are right, I should leave the Vet thing out, I see what a mess it made here.

If a HA is what I need, as long as it works, I'm not too picky.

None of the walmarts in my area have those, not even the bigger ones.

I have no health plan.

I don't know where a rehab place is.

Let me google that for you

Offices Listing

They have services to help you get job training, help with
school and whatnot, but you don't have to use those services. If you already, you can tell them you need to be able to hear to keep the job, The whole purpose of the VRC is to help people with disablities work so they're not sitting at home collecting social security.

Thanks, email sent to the local office, now we play the waiting game. I also contacted a hearing place that is 40 miles away and they *might* be able to see me.
