Does your house have a monitored security system? Which company? Are you satisfied with the cost and service?

We are checking out various companies for a home security system. Some systems are hard wired after construction, some use built-in wiring, some are wireless. There are sooooo many different options! That is, infrared sensors, window and/or door sensors, glass breakage sensors, remotes, fire/smoke detectors, etc.

My daughter's service costs $45 per month for security and fire monitoring. I was hoping for something closer to $25/month.

Not as fancy as what you're talking about but there are do it yourself camera systems that will work with the internet and smart phones. I've never used any so i'm not endorsing them but it might be something to look at.

Hi Reba!

By they way..glad you got it resolved with your computer thingy...what is called?? Hard drive?? But glad you got it resolved.

Anyway..back to the topic... Yes I do have security systems with ADT. Really the minimum you can find is about 35 per month.. I'm paying about little more than that since 8 years ago.

You really don't need glass breakage sensor...this is common for store display that have expensive clothing or jewelry display at the front you know? and the only two main things are the door and window sensors that installed on first floor (second or 3rd or 4th floor are not needed) with will give you a quick response to security department than using infrared sensor. Now why using infrared sensors? It allow you to control the perimeters that you can only turn on the alarm externally while family are in the house. And one once all the family are in bed or out of town and you can activate the internal perimeters. Now let you know that I hardly ever use the internal perimeters because it's pain in the *ss that when I walk into the kitchen and suddenly the alarm went off. Or when my dog love to play with alarm. Jeesh.. anyway.... So, today technology is webcam... you know that webcam act as infrared sensor and now it's becoming popular because it act both infrared sensor and video recording. So, infrared sensor becoming useless.

Now the cheapest way which I could have done is to install wireless webcams or POE webcam (which give you the clearest video image) and it will send almost any devices like iPhone, android or computer an alarm and all you have to do is to call the police and inform them that there is "thief" in progress. That will save you the cost of paying the security services. And the best part it allow you to record all the video image that you can send it to the police. The only draw back is webcam doesn't have heat sensor or smoke sensor...but there are one made which pretty expensive...so..

The only advantage with security system I have...which is expensive is that it have full lights activation plus voice announcement telling me where the breach carbon monoxide or fire located. Even voice announcement will tell me the intruder is sitting in bathroom taking a sh*t. Ok I'm exaggerating.

Hope this help.

Yes, thank you. :)

Do you mean using a camera so I can watch someone break into my house?

Yes my security system being a 12 gauge shotgun with free slugs for every unwelcome visitors.

I guess I wasn't clear in my request.

I want to know about security for when we're not home. We have shotguns too but they don't guard themselves when we're not home. :giggle:

your neighbor :giggle:
Right now, we have no neighbor on one side (house is for sale), and the other neighbor is a deputy sheriff. Ironically, our house isn't in his jurisdiction, so he probably wouldn't get the call. ;)

 yes, you would have to call the cops youself. It's not a system monitored by another company but it does send you alerts if alarms are trigered. As i understand it you can turn individual alarms on and off with some so you could say let someone into your house to do repairs but if they go into someplace you told them not to then you get an alert.

I don't know about that....:hmm:

I was just learning more about this Logitech system. as long as it's connected, it can notify you immediately of any movement in the house.

but IMO - I'd prefer a "real" home security system though for my own home.

In all seriousness most likely a service basic plan like ADT would be best if your worried about monitoring and having the police do the work without you calling.

Unless you rig that shotgun on a pulley with string but i've almost shot my leg off a few times running back into the house to grab something i forgot.:rifle:

One thing I never liked about big box security systems is that in the event of an alarm they will first call you to be sure it is a real alarm then they call the police. Most police can not respond for around 8 minutes or more, 8 being good. In that time they burgular is long gone. Better to have cameras, motion dectors , an app to alert your smartphone with vids and a very loud exterior alarm. To. Scare the burgular away.

I very rarely have the ringer or vibrator turned on my phone. Most of the times when I'm not home I'm somewhere that I can't use my phone. I probably wouldn't know about the break in for at least an hour; that's worse than 8 minutes!

I wonder how useful those house alarms are. My neighbors' alarm has gone off several times (accidentally), and no one heard it. Our houses are too soundproof.

An outside alarm can be pretty loud. Burgular would see that. Can also use fake cameras outside to fake out someone around the house. I use game camers that just shoot on motions.
