Going to get my very first HAs. I'm really nervous. Don't know what to expect. Wish me luck. :(

Don't take it so hard. These days, the one thing you can count on is that most people will end up needing hearing aids...I can think of far worse situations...let us how you're doing when you have time.

Hi everyone, I'm back, thanks for all of the support.

When she first activated them, it sounded really loud to the right (the right has a little bit more loss than the left) so she adjusted it. I was really nervous because I didn't know what to expect in terms of what I was going to hear. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this is!

I can hear footsteps of someone walking across the street while I was at a stop light, I heard my son moving a plastic bag in the back of the car, I heard the leaves on the trees rustle...

I heard my cat making a weird cooing sound when I coddled her. I can hear myself breathe. That was trippy.

Ambrosia, I had a frowny face because I was scared. Getting the HAs is the reality of my hearing loss. It's a physical proof that I am not hearing like I'm supposed to be.

But all in all, I think I'm going to be okay. You guys have all given me support through this and calmed a lot of my fears. You answered a lot of the questions I had in mind and informed me so that when I went in for these appointments, I knew what to ask.

Granted I did not ask a lot of questions here, others did and I looked and searched all over this forum for information.

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcomes here, and for being so kind. Thank you AllDeaf <3

Congrats, and happy that they are working out for you!!!

Yes, hearing things again for the first time in years is a rush....something everyone takes for granted.

One thing you will definitely enjoy.....when you are tired of hearing everything, you can turn those things off and rest.....something hearing people cannot do....

LOL!! Green, that's a great idea! But for now she did not install the switch, she wanted me to get used to them being on all of the time. She said if I want them off, to take them off but she says a majority of the new users won't take them off because it's a hassle to have to put them away and such. So this is her way of getting new people to get used to them, which in essence, speeds up the adjustment process.

:D you're reminding me of getting my first aids! Everything was freaking me out, the fans on the fridges at work, hearing the coffee brewing, I remember getting out of my car coming home from the audiologist, I shut the car door and scared the bejesus out of myself :) listening to my littles ones who were prob 2 and 4 at the time and telling them omg would you guys quiet down you're so loud lol my husband laughed at me. Just wait, everybody drive me nuts, "can you hear me now?" "Can you hear me now?" All day everyday for days lol.

I get you though, when I was going through some pretty rapid loss I used to have nightmares I'd wake up one morning and not be able hear anything. That fear has been realized now, but it didn't happen over night, got to adjust little by little. But I couldn't wait to get my hearing aids!!

WOW you can't even tell your wearing a HA. The first thing I heard with my CI was my own footsteps. I'm really happy things are going so well for you.

When I got my hearing aids, I sat on the front lawn and listened to cars go by, which I never knew made a sound. I also heard the birds on the feeder for the first time and the crickets at night...those are still my favorite sounds, along with hearing the ducks at night and early in the morning while I have my coffee. Of course, hearing my family was another big advantage that I never thought I'd have....

Just keep a notebook with you in case you have anything you'd like changed; that way the audiologist can have a list in front of her/him to know how to adjust the settings if need be....Congrats.....

i spent half my life hearing so for me i tend to hear things like bird song in my head.i dont wear them often as they use make me feel very sick but that just me..i know i could get upgrade but i got so use to being as i am..one thing i miss is frogs toads Spring time
i pleased for you congrats

You guys are all awesome! I love hearing the stories of what you first heard when you got your HAs!! It's kind of melancholy, I didn't realize that these sounds were gone.

Ambrosia, you made me bust up when I read about you closing the car door and scaring yourself!! And yes, last night I had to tell my 19 year old to lower his voice when he was talking to me. He gave me a weird look, he's so used to speaking loudly.

Right after I got the HAs, my husband and son wanted to stop by a store that was nearby. While they were looking at stuff, I ran off to the women's section. I saw top that I liked and as I stood there checking it out, I heard a very loud sound come on suddenly from above and it actually made me duck...

I looked up, saw a vent and I hurriedly ran over to my husband and I pointed to the vent and told him that thing was super loud! He just smiled at me.

Later after I wandered off again, he was looking for me and I heard him call my name. When I looked up, he was was further than I thought he was. That was another thing that made me so amazed.

I didn't realize how quiet things have become.

LOL..

After I got my CI's:

- Birds....man, somebody shoot those bastards!!!!! How can anyone stand listening to them all day??? Same tune over, and over......

- I make noise while walking. Took me awhile to figure it out...clothes brushing against each other. Good thing I don't have corduroys anymore.

- Keyboard clicking is a lot noisier than I thought. Even the mouse makes loud clicks.

- I did not know that cats snore.

- Can hear my black Lab lapping his water from across the house.

- The pitch of my car's engine changes as the gears change.

- Raindrops hitting the windshield at speed does not sound good.

- Can differentiate between a Harley and a Japanese V-twin.

- Do people in real life make as much noise as the ones in porn flicks?

- How can hearing people not go crazy having hardwood floor squeaks?

- Now I know why everyone smokes a joint while listening to Pink Floyd.

- Have rear bicycle wheels always been this noisy?

and many, many more..................

What color HA did you get? I was 8 yo when I got my first HA and I was really shocked at how loud a paper bag was and I did not know what rain sound like when it fell on my unbrella. It is a trip hearing new sounds or hearing them again.

Cats don't know they snore, neither do dogs...or humans for that matter. We had neighbors over recently, one was allergic to cats, and the other clearly never had been around animals. One of our cats sat near them and began to purr; the two guests turned around and said "What's that noise?" My father said, "Happiness....that's how cats say they're content." They were both fully hearing too...just clueless...

Remembering my days as a student staying awake late and getting up early: this was before I had a deaf alarm so I slept with my hearing aids on, praying I'd hear the alarm. Well...didn't work out that way. The mattress squeaked, I heard the cars go by (summertime, windows were open). I asked myself: "How the Hell do hearing people sleep at night?"

Is sex like a porn movie...I seriously doubt it...maybe your fantasy? :D

All those little noises, aren't as loud to hearing people. For some reasons our aids make all that stuff louder than it would normally be, too bad it doesn't it that with voices!!

But it def shocking to hear all those little things after not hearing them for so long!
