What would you do?

I see what you mean. I don't have a BB gun, and the guns that I do have would do more than scare the dog--they would bring the police!

I like your idea of some other noisemaker. Maybe TCS can sit at the end of their driveway with his motorcycle and rev it up each time the dog barks. It might not stop the dog but it could demonstrate to the owners how annoying it is.

The idea came from my childhood when we had a neighborhood problem with birds — starlings — and people took to using boards held down by one foot and snapped against the concrete sidewalks about the time the birds were wanting to roost.

Reba - here's a thought - we had a constant barker in this neighborhood. The owners would not do anything except laugh. Animal control could do nothing except cite them for the noise, but since dog was not running loose and was up to date on all shot and being taken care of, their hands were tied. Hubby was working 3rd shift and could not sleep with this barking. He got really ;pissed and upset, and went to the edge of the fence and just hit the air horn from his boat. He called the Town Hall first and we also notified the Sheriff's officer who lived in the neighborhood first. After a 30 second blast from the air horn. The barking stopped. 15 minutes later, it started and we hit the air horn again. After about 5 times, the dog got the message. He no longer barks out of control like that, and he still has a happy home. No injuries, no legal issues, and a ton of pleased neighbors.

Hey, I'm Deaf so you'll have to educate me. Does a motorcycle with turbocharger make louder noise than those that does not have turbo? Just trying to think of solutions.

I have a similar problem with the neighborhood dogs, there's about at least 3-5 dogs who join in once my next door neighbor's dogs (there are more than one) starts howling. It is not bad enough that it goes on all the time, but it is annoying enough to cause a disturbance during hours peace is expected past 9-10pm. Usually I'm still awake and have my hearing aids on. I'm told they work graveyard and early mornings, so they are never around during the usual 5-9pm most folks are around.

The dogs will howl anytime during the day that it is in the backyard and the neighbors are not home. Then the other dogs around our neighborhood start joining in. It's fortunate I don't hear it when I go to bed, but I don't know about the other residents on our street.

I looked into what could be done legally, but it seems in our county there is not much I can do than 1) Call the local PD, if they bother to respond to it they will just give them a notice, 2) the officials recommended that I work it out with the neighbors or 3) contact the BBB to act as a mediator. I don't plan to do this yet unless I see the other non-dog neighbors feel the same way.

One temporary solution I've had was to hook up a small alarm clock in the backyard that can turn on the radio in a set time, I set it a volume low enough that the dogs can hear and it works on the days I really could use a break from the howling.

Good luck on your solution, I don't think it's easy to figure this out from legal assistance.

When I was looking at articles about the situation, I came across an real estate blog about howling/yapping dogs by neighbors can drive down the value of a home. :noway:

Don't know about any bikes with turbo. :dunno:

Great! I'll pass that on to TCS. If we can time it right, that might work.

The owner moved out of state a few weeks ago. She has a realtor handling the actual sale. We did the remodeling, landscaping, staging, etc., for the house.

We hardly know the other neighbor. I don't see them around much.

I would let the realtor worry about the dog and try to stay on good side of the neighbor . If the dog barking is bothering you too then you should let your neighbor know about. If they do nothing , find out what actions you can take. The woman was lucky to have nice neighbor like you . Most people do not like to get involved with their neighbors where I live .

We were lucky to have her and her late husband as our neighbors. They were a sweet couple. I miss them. I hope our new neighbors will be nice.

We have several other nice neighbors on the other side of our house, across the street, and further down the street. We help each other out with projects, lend tools, use our trailer to haul stuff, give each other lifts, and generally watch out for each other. We attend their funerals (we've lost some good neighbors), graduation celebrations, and Christmas open houses. TCS and another neighbor ride on PGR missions together.

When new people moved into our immediate neighborhood, we introduced ourselves and gave them some home-baked cookies and a welcome card, with our names, address and phone number included.

Use the "Noise Abatement Law" call the police and make a report, use the dog owners address when you call not yours. Police will show and hear the dog and give a verbal warning, second time either a warning or citation to court. Make sure you or someone is in the yard or whatever so the dog is barking, if you use a cell, be where they can hear the dog yapping.. Ive done this with a nuisance neighbor before. I believe the noise abatement law is in all states now.
You can remain anominous

Also, here in Missouri, I don't know about other states but the homeowner can sue for loss of sales due to any nuesances created by the neighbors... if the house appraises at 100,ooo and it only sells for 75,000 and the buyers make note of it or the home seller can prove its the reason for loss income...
Im not sure but have the homeowner talk to the realitor as well, but definitely get the po-po involved, its a scare tactic and it does work usually the first call.
