Extra Taxes After A Car Crash?... up to $2.000? WTF

Well, not for uninsured drivers - the city will bill directly to uninsured drivers - but be uninsured drivers are stupid.

After insurance take care of them, so any left remaining balance will goes to drivers for out of pocket or deductible.

Where does the article say that?

In Texas we impound uninsured vehicles.

It doesn't say about article, but I do know about how insurance works.

Impound car? Not happened in all states.

This article is about a city in Texas......my comment was about what we do in Texas, not other states. I don't believe that is the way "insurance works" in this case. Generally speaking, most accidents that require an emergency response are going to exceed the policies deductible. But that is irrelevant. In most cases this type of fee would be considered a liability claim....therefore, no deductible.

In which the insurance company is sure to pass along the costs to their consumers.

Yes, in future, many parents may unable to afford to insure the teen drivers because cost of insurance is getting expensive. Back in 2005, the monthly cost for my insurance was $300+. Today, my insurance monthly is $80 per month.

Why? They are levying a punishing tax (fine) upon all safe drivers for the fault of a few.

That's good point and that why I don't support crash tax.

I drive safely yet I've been in accidents (tickets going to other drivers, not me). I've had things happen to my Jeep, which was not a crappy car (projectile shattering driver's window, brand new valve stem popping out of brand new tire causing blowout). Driving safely is no guarantee that something won't happen to you.

I'm strongly agree with you and I was victim of uninsured driver.

Insurance is a business. This is business 101

Again, I'm not blaming the business. I'm blaming government. They have no right to infringe on a business like that.

Chip chip chip... away our rights (money) go.

Ah, well that is a conundrum. In places where this has already been applies, the fee was normally charged only to those who live outside of the city. So it is a way of taxing non residents for city services. I am sure you are familiar with Missouri City, a town of less than 100,000 bordering one of the biggest cities in the U.S. That city gets a great deal of traffic compared to its tiny population, so what they are doing kind of makes sense. Not necessarily saying I support it, but I see what they are thinking.

I not only am familiar with it but I lived there for a solid two years. I hate Missouri City. It's a very oppressive town. I know you like a strong police force. I do too but they're oppressive. Like Bellaire and the Williamson County grandma tasering folks just north of here.

I received my first traffic ticket in Bellaire. It was 100% BS. I got payback a year later. Bellaire had the Number 1 ranked baseball team in the nation. Chuck Knoblauch played for that team and we were good friends. We beat them 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs. :)

Haha!! JUSTICE IS SWEET!

I have never really talked to him but I'm pretty sure I have served Chuck a few times. I think it was Brennan's of Houston that he came into from time to time. I used to valet park cars for almost 12 years. Small world!

Cool! I saw him at a Toys for Tots fundraiser down at Houston Sportsplex about 4 years ago.

Isn't that the way it works? The few that are causing the grief make us all pay for what they do? Even though the bill would go to the insurance companies they simply pass it on to the consumer. We all cause some grief sometime or another so maybe it balances out in the long run. :dunno:

How it works doesn't matter. It's immoral and reprehensible. There is no benefit to it. It's certainly not going to make me "less likely" to cause an accident. After all... it is the insurance company who's going to have to pay. This tax's purpose is only to generate revenue. It's like the hoarding rainwater and the Patroit Act.

Wake up, people! Chip chip chip...

My car was totaled by a teenage driver in his new hot rod . The kid was 100% at fault , he got the ticket and I sued him and got $$$. My car was not run down but it was not new. I did see a car on the road a few days ago and it was literally falling apart, the rear end bumper was held together with
scotch tape! I do not know how the car could had pass inspection.

At a gas station, I once TALKED with a guy using a flashlight as his headlights. He taped them on there. I know unsafe but it was hilarious. You just had to be there.
