Do you say Yes or No for GPS on convicted sex offenders?
an offender may be found guilty, innocent, or falsely convicted.

What are some good reasons you have for your decision?

My answer - I don't know so I have two different sides.

The GPS on sex offenders can be good idea to keep to track them, instead of disappear in anywhere, so USA have many places to hide, even they could cross the Mexico or Canada.

Other side, it raise the constitution question because it is possible to be unconstitutional under Eighth Amendment. The sex offenders will complain about invasion of privacy. There are some high school kids with age difference, such as 18 years old boy sex with 17 years old girl with consent, but girl's parent will charge the boy as rape and require to register as sex offender for life.

I say NO because "sex offender" is bit too broad and handful of people are borderline innocent. ie - 18 years old boyfriend would be convicted of statuary rape with minor for having sex with 17 years old girlfriend.

but I say YES for repeated offenders and child rapists.

But the GPS system does have trouble updating when offenders live in bad cell phone signal areas. Charge $ a day for each offender?

GPS module doesn't use cell phone signal.

I would say no, invasion of privacy at general. It won't work here in the United States. Also, if one really want to escape, it is the easiest way to escape. I heard one case that convict actually took it off themselves and put it on golden retriever to fool officials.

Afraid yes it does. What happens with GPS is that it needs at least 3 cell phone towers to measure exact location of the device, that is how it works. If only two or one cell tower, then GPS won't work. I thought the same thing like you thought so few years ago until I found out exact how it works. Interesting.

you do realize that there are several different kinds of GPS?

and you do realize that GPS = Global Positioning System? it uses satellites.... like car navigation GPS.... which does not use cell phone signal. You cannot call a device that doesn't use satellites as "GPS".

GPS module does not use cellphone signal but it can work with another module that uses cellphone signal. that's called A-GPS.... which is what cellphone is using.

the ankle monitor that a parole wears... the common one doesn't contain GPS or AGPS. it's just a radio transmitter sent to a receiver which is installed at parole's house... connected to either cell signal or phone line. but there is an ankle monitor that works like cellphone with GPS but problem is... it's bulky and it drains a battery quick.

No. I'd rather execute them all. They WILL do it again.

A 18/17 year old is absurd and that issue needs to be cleared up. I have a friend in the same boat. He served 7 years in Huntsville and got out a couple years ago. He was just a little older (23) dating a 17 year old. As much as I do not approve... he's now a sex offender for life and a felon. I think his punishment was awfully harsh.

Still gao decide. I would leap on "YES" because that certain whom have bad history, should be track while once shouldn't be track.

I don't think it would be effective.

If it's for convicted sex offenders then it could be part of their parole conditions but it only tells where the offender is, not what he's doing.

What about sex offenders who haven't even been caught yet? They're still out there. Believing that all sex offenders are being tracked gives a false sense of security to the public.

It is a pretty sticky situation but never hurt to say YES. for Sex offenders even though if they are innocent butwe better play it safe to get GPS on person. =X

If an offender is found innocent, then he isn't an offender, and wouldn't need to be tracked. In fact, anyone found innocent (or not guilty) can't be put under any kind of restriction. That would be a violation of due process.

Now, as a condition of a bond for release, a person who has not yet been convicted could be required to wear a device.

Someone can be wrongly convicted but not falsely convicted. That is, the conviction can be wrong (the person was really innocent of the crime) but the conviction is real, not false. In order for the conviction to be overturned requires following another due process. If the conviction is overturned, then the person would be not guilty and not be allowed to be tracked. If the conviction is not overturned, then all the restrictions that were included in the sentencing would continue.

There is legally no such thing as an innocent sex offender.

For a convicted Sex Offender...why even bother with the GPS?...Why not make it mandatory for casteration (especially when there are children involved)....or a drug to make the offender impotent...then again....the offender can get his rocks off in other ways...and offend time and time again.....

Sex Offenders (sick monsters of nature) are the scum of the Earth...an Island just for them would be appropriate...let them rape and molest their own kind without the worry of repurcusions from the law-abiding public.

As for their "legal rights"....I don't give a damn and as far as I'm concerned...they have no legal rights after commiting a crime against children...I would not hesitate for one second to blow away an offender if I caught him in the act against a child.

Wirelessly posted

People are actually worried about GPS?? Most sex offenders complain about their address and photos being displayed for anyone to veiw. So I am sure the GPS is the leastt of their worries. Ankle braclets are costly and a waste of time.

yea the cheapest and probably the most effective solution is Megan's Law.
