I was reading one of my friends' facebook status. WHile she was driving, one window somehow fell down and it cannot get up. It's very likely it fell off the track and is stuck down. Now she went out to ask for quote to fix it. Guess what she got quoted for----$400!! Yes, you see, $400!!! I know mechanics need to make money, but $400 to fix a window that fell down and is stuck down.

Have you as a guy or woman been ripped off with outrageous quotes before?

She should contact her car insurance and ask them if they can't cover it.
And at least get a second and third opinion.

I wonder how hard it would be to pull apart a car door panel anyway...

My GF's friend had tire problems and went to a tire place for service. The guy found that almost all her tires were nearly bald, and one even had the steel belting showing in a few places.

She came away with four new tires... the most expensive ones they had for her car (Vauxhall Corsa) so I think the guys there figured if she'd let her car get into such a bad condition she wouldn't know she was being ripped off.

No, car insurances won't cover it but a warranty does. If the warranty expires, then you are on your own.

I think Pep Boys offer reasonable rates. Every time I compared the rates with three different places, Pep Boys' rate was the lowest.

It's not hard to remove a door panel but to fix the window or replace its motor is harder.

Yeah ,I had a plumber do some work for me and the plumber send me a bill and tried to bill me $12.00 for a tube of caulking ! I made a check out and paid only half of the bill that was over $300 and wrote 'paid in full' on my check. I write this on all my checks .
The plumbing company never asked me for the rest of the money! They thought they could pad my bill and being a woman I would paid $12.00 for a tube of caulking and I did not get to keep the tube that had a lot of caulking in it !

I feel more and more women are more savvy these days they they were in the past....(at least I hope so!)....

Learn a little about mechanics and get a 2nd opinion....ask ur family/friends for advise before paying out a large sum for repairs.....

I think it is very common women get charged higher prices for auto repairs. It has happened to women whom I have previously dated.

Yes that is true , but there are a lot of elderly people that live alone and they become easy target to take advance of and it not only women , it men too.

You never know.
It can't hurt to inquire since it could affect the safety of the driver.

Not all are like that. You got to know what place are honest and dishonest.

Oh yeah.. back in college, there's one woman who is counseling support for college students and she was having problem with her car. She took it to Hyundai dealership to get it checked and they said they got it fixed. Turn out that it's not fixed. She took it back and for the third time, it's still not fixed. After she heard about me being a mechanic (I rebuild, repair you name it) and she asked me that she was having hard time starting up her car and want an advice. So I take a look and knew immediatly it's the starter gear not catching the flywheel. So, I asked her what did the dealership say that they got it fixed? She told me that it was coming from her window wiper motor, other say it came from bad battery, need to replace and I can't remember what other one...but I got really furious!! Of how dealership mechanic taking advantage of deaf woman of having her keep coming back to get it fixed. She's really in a tight budget, and I was really really furious. So, I helped her to get it fixed by replacing the starter gear and it was only $35 at that time. Then she was very happy that it start up the car like a breeze. Then I wrote a letter to Rochester Newspaper in "Opinions" section, lashing out about this dealership and I even wrote to BBB. Two months later this dealership was shut down completely.

[added: Ha ha, I was re-reading my reply... when I mentioned the words "wrote a letter"...wow... during that time, the "E-mail" technology was not a wide spread yet, but "writing a letter" is long gone.....]

My GFs Honda Civic which has 225,000 miles on it started bucking and making a loud wining noise which she described it as a rrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRR!!!! Really bad gas mileage too. The first gas station said it was a distributer cap, Honda did have issues with the distributer bearing going but after googleing I found that this was not the case. They wanted to charge her $400 dollars for the cap. She took it to another garage and they said it had to many codes, the transmission and the computer were bad-$2500 to fix it. They also told her they would give her $250 bucks for the car for parts.

I took it for a test drive and found that it wasnt bucking-it just wasnt shifing out of 2nd gear. Everything sounded good-fluid levels good and no odd smells. I took it to a transmission shop and they found the throttle position sensor was bad-$180 bucks to fi it.

Yes ladies-they see you coming from a mile away. Guess what-if they take you for a ride its your fault. You need to educate yourselves, ask and look around. Stop playing the victim. Learn how to check fluids, listen for odd noises, keep a maintenance schedule. Cars are not toys and they need to be maintained properly. Get educated!

I am a big fan of-

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime

Or in this case "a woman"
