I'm curious if any of you have hired people to do web hosting service for you? I don't need names or sites you wanted to host. I'm interested if you were happy you hired someone to host your site? Would you do that again? Why or why not? I'm wondering if I should do that for my bike business. THat is why I asked.

I've registered domain names with GoDaddy.com and bought hosting services from Host Gator . com.

I've been happy with the services of both, but I'm looking for a new domain registrar, because GoDaddy.com supported SOPA and CISPA. I don't know who else is a really good domain registrar, though.

I've run many websites over the years.

I did not hire anyone to do this for me, but I am able to figure out how to set up websites. For some people, it might seem complicated.

For your bike business, I might suggest looking into getting a free Wordpress blog and buying a domain name. Point the domain name to your Wordpress blog. WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here

(You can even get started with a Wordpress blog before you even buy a domain name.)

Later on, when you become more confident about how to do things, you could buy hosting space and build a full-fledged web site.

It depends on what you want to do with the site. If you want the ability to take payment online, that's more complicated. But if you just want to list your inventory and contact information and stuff like that, a free Wordpress blog should be able to handle that.

Ask me if you have more questions, I don't mind.

Why would you want to HIRE someone to buy a web hosting service? Lately it's so evolved and easy that you'd have to be a real idiot to get stumped. There are even services that will host an entire store for you and do everything like inventory management, specials, promotions, search engine optimization.

The days of an elite webmaster are over.

This is true. It is much easier than it used to be.

I would not recommend hiring anyone to do it for you. Do it yourself, and allow yourself time to figure it out. In reality, it would only take me a day or two to get a site set up. If it's your first time, you might allow yourself a month, because you're learning how for the first time.

It is pretty much easier to do it yourself, and plus you can use the internet to help you out as well. I use crazydomains servers for my websites.

Many of the web hosting service provide you tools you need.... for free. I would start out with free web applications and it will get you easy step by step of how you want to set it up. If you don't like what they provided, you can still get a third party free web application to install on your web hosting server. One are builders and other is templates, there are million out there that you can choose from. Why need to hire web builder to do it for you, and it cost quite a bit of money compare to free web applications?

For me, I design it my own because of the way I want from my dream, there are some obstacle of what they provided, I have my own personal touch to the web.

Edit: I forgot to add, the most important thing is you need to create a domain name which add a little money to buy it. Then you can decide which hosting service/provider you want to use then have that domain name pointed to that hosting service.

I think Yola has free web hosting service.

If I took a class to learn how to navigate a website, would it be worth the trouble?

To navigate websites? You're doing that already, right?

Maybe you mean to learn how to code websites? That could be worth it if you plan to customize your websites. Personally, I find that it is simple enough that a book from the library can teach you what you need to know. Try to find as recent a book as possible on HTML and PHP coding, for starters.

But if you're going to use Wordpress (for example) on your sites, all you might want to do is just customize it rather than code from scratch.

If a classroom setting would work better for you, a class on webdesign and coding might work.

well - if I were to create a website for my own business and make some real money.... I would definitely hire a professional for that.

anybody can buy a domain name and web hosting service and post up a few pages or create wordpress..... but the difference is..... the professional webmaster/web developer has skill and knowledge to actually turn your business into a profitable business thru website. this is a very specialized skill - SEO, ecommerce, shopping cart, SSL, web/email marketing, etc.

any moron can make a simple 2-3 pages website for their own small businesses.... but they're not making any money and their websites are not getting much hits. hire a professional and you'll see a result in a few months.

but that takes years to learn all these stuff and to successfully turn your website into a money-generating machine.

you can either spend your money and time on learning things that will take a long time.... or hire a professional to get it done in short time.

Ditto on hiring a professional. There are even turn-key e-commerce sites such as bigcommerce.com that allow you to build a professional-looking website without even hiring a web developer.

I should know because I'm a computer programmer and those days of making your own geocities site are over. If you're just wanting to make some kind of blog you'd be way better off using wordpress or some other blog site. Why spend years figuring out how to build a site? You would get much more benefit focusing on the content and let the pros handle the look and feel and navigation.

That's true... but if he wants to learn the coding behind that, I don't want to dissuade him of that. It's useful knowledge. This stuff can be found in a library book.

Depends on what you want to do, Derek. If you have a treasure chest full of money, maybe you can hire pros to build it for you. If you don't have a lot of money to invest, then you might have to shoestring it. Depends on what resources you have.

Do you know exactly what you need your website to do? What do you want your customer to be able to do when they browse your website?

Most of my stuffs sell locally on craigslist. I want people from out of state to find my website. I would love to have a lot of hits. The more hits I get, the more likely I'll have a customer.

I want people to be interested in checking my website for new inventories. I want to be able to add new inventories maybe 3 or 4 times a week.

I want to be able to add/subtract inventories from Android mobile phone.

I've had someone suggest that I take credit card over website. I would like to do that.

I'll need a real business name to have a site professionally run. How do I know no one else is using it?

I'm not exactly tech savvy. The easiest thing is to have site running for me. Not sure of price. Would have to dig into that.

So basically, I would like a website developed for me. I would probably want design changed maybe every 3 or 4 months to keep people excited. Maybe change cover picture every 3 or 4 months.

What I'll be doing almost every day is adding inventories. I figure that if items sell, then they'll be automatically deleted, right?

yes - you'll need a professional webmaster/web developer/etc. to do SEO (search engine optimization) so that your website will appear in first page of google page if a customer is looking for your site.

you'll have to pay for that kind of service but it's not that expensive.

that's why it's very important to think and plan very carefully. your website has to be very functional and easy to use... as well as good design. do not focus too much on making your site looks very pretty and awesome.

there are tons of websites that look very awesome.... but the functionality is crap! nobody will come back. keep your site simple, functional, and cool and customers will keep coming back! but it's also very important to keep your site always updated with new information/products/etc. otherwise customers will have no reason to come back if there's nothing going on.

look at craigslist. a very very simple site with no design or pictures and yet.... it's extremely popular. people are always coming back to craigslist because there's always new stuff to check. a very functional, simple site is the best..... and profitable.

but this is what web developer should knows. a very good web developer is aware of this and will design your site based on your needs. biggest problem is that a client is very stubborn and keeps telling web developer what to do and what he wants. that's not good. you need to trust a professional to do his job and you have to keep an open-minded because he's a professional and he knows what he's doing. after all..... you are the one who hired him so that means you must have trusted him enough to do the job. so tell him exactly what you want and he will make your dream comes true.

it is bit hard to find a good web developer because that kind of professional is usually very expensive but hopefully - there is a professional out there who is willing to share his time and skill to help people with small businesses.

I want to be able to add/subtract inventories from Android mobile phone.
yea you can do that. your site will have to be optimized for mobile use.

I've had someone suggest that I take credit card over website. I would like to do that.
you can do that with Paypal service. Paypal is now offering a card reader service - https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader but you'll need iphone for it. I don't know if there's a card reader device for android.

I'll need a real business name to have a site professionally run. How do I know no one else is using it?
you can go to Domain Names | The World's Largest Domain Name Registrar - Go Daddy and type in a domain name to check if it's taken or not.

I'm not exactly tech savvy. The easiest thing is to have site running for me. Not sure of price. Would have to dig into that.
you can try bartering. many many ways to do this - one-time payment for whole thing (half now, half later). or pay him $$ and maybe 1 year of a small percentage of your profit for each bike sold. or offer to give him a couple of nice bikes. many ways. you can figure it out because you're creative.

best to find a local web programmer who loves riding bicycle.

So basically, I would like a website developed for me. I would probably want design changed maybe every 3 or 4 months to keep people excited. Maybe change cover picture every 3 or 4 months.
well don't do that. constantly changing design every 3-4 months is a sign that your website isn't working well. it would confuse or frustrate your returning customers because everything's all different now especially the location of links.

a famous philosophy from a well-known web consultant Steve Krug - "Dont make me think." I attended his conference in Dallas. Excellent info.

for example - look at #1 search site... Google. Same design for basically over 10 years and it's still kicking bing's ass, yahoo, etc. it's ok to change the pictures, coloring, and some small things but you should try your best to minimize how often you change such as location of links and the core functionality because customers have already learned how to use your site and they want to do it quickly without thinking... and then all of sudden, you changed your web design and your customers have to learn it again. how frustrating is that?

that's why home depot, walmart, target, etc. have similar/same layout so that people know where to go to buy something quickly at any location.

however - one exception. it's ok to change the location of your links or improve your core function based on web analysis. for example - if you look at walgreen website. there's a lot of things in it. a web consultant company did some study and found that a majority of customers go to walgreen for only 3 things - store locators, prescriptions, and photo printing. those 3 things represent 60% of traffic.... and yet those 3 important links represent only 5% of the website space. no one cares about rest of the stuff.

that's why amazon is always changing its design and yet.... nobody is still clicking on these links or paying attention to it. you know what's the first thing that customers do? they go straight to search bar and type in whatever they're looking for.

What I'll be doing almost every day is adding inventories. I figure that if items sell, then they'll be automatically deleted, right?
yes you can do that.

my recommendations for you -

1. figure out a simple cool domain name - something that's very easy for customers to remember to type in. for example - dereksbicycles.com is easy to remember because customer knows your name and what you're selling. thedereksbicycles.com is bad! nobody can instinctively remember to type in "the". another thing to consider - you should also buy dereksbicycle.com because some customers will forget to type in "s". if your dereksbicycles.com is very popular and profitable.... some idiots will buy dereksbicycle.com because they know some customers will make mistake and that's how they make money from internet traffic. you can have as many domain addresses as you want and all URLs will go to same website.

2. focus on functionality first... not design. that's why craigslist is popular.

3. find a web developer who specializes in SEO, database, and ecommerce. avoid the one who specializes in design but not functionality.

I want to thank everyone for constructive feedbacks. Rest assured, I'll have many more questions down the road :).
