With the price of gas in California reaching record highs, thieves are increasingly targeting gas tanks with the most recent heist siphoning more than $4,500 from a gas station over a span of three days.
Police in Roseville, Calif., have arrested a man for allegedly stealing more than 1,100 gallons of gas from a Shell station four times in three days starting on Sept. 27.

Roseville Police told ABC News that a male suspect is in custody, but they are still looking for a female suspect who they've identified. The truck was located and recovered by police with 110 gallons of gas on board. The gas has since been turned over the the station's manager, Tony Sandhu.

Sandhu told ABC News affiliate KABC-TV Saturday that the thieves rolled up to the station in a pickup truck and managed to bypass the pay-at-the-pump meter on Sept. 27. The thieves pumped 300 gallons of gas into a tank that was located in the back of the truck around 1:30 a.m., according to police. The station was closed at the time and it's not clear how the thieves turned on the pump.

"I don't know if we can recover that money or not, but at least those people should go to jail," said Sandhu.

Police believe thieves came back twice the next day while the station was closed and drove off with hundreds of gallons of gas. Then, they came back the following day during store hours to steal even more.

Sandhu told KABC that security cameras caught the thieves siphoning the gas and when they returned during business hours, a cashier recognized the truck and took down the licenses plate.

"It actually brought it to the attention of the owner because he was short on his tallies for his amount of gas," said Lt. Cal Walstad of the Roseville Police Department.

In all, the thieves managed to get away with 1,153 gallons of the liquid gold, according to police.

The price of gas hit an all-time average high in California on Sunday, costing drivers $4.70 a gallon, up 53 cents from last week's average.

Recent refinery fires in the state and pipeline problems are the culprits behind the high prices that are causing California reserves to hit a 10-year low.

Earlier this summer, thieves punctured tanks and cut fuel lines in a fleet of rental trucks in southern California. This past spring at another Sacramento gas station, two men were caught on camera prying open an underground tank and funneling thousands of dollars of gas straight into their fake bread truck.

Analysts predict that relief is in sight and prices will bottom out near $3.50 a gallon by Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest times for traveling.

Crazy! I wonder what the heck he did to store all that gas? It's apparently becoming a major issue in CA, where people who don't have locked gas tanks are waking up to find their tank of gas had been siphoned out to the last drop.

well it said -

and it's not really hard to store all these gas. get a couple of barrels and you're good to go. I believe one barrel is 42 gallons.

in modern cars - it doesn't matter if your gas tank cover is locked or not. you can't siphon it anyway because there is something inside the filler neck that would prevent it.

Hahaha don't be too naive

In fact it is easy to unlock the locked gas cap. I have tested and it flunked my test big time.

Some of u think what to do with stolen gas? Have you heard of "Craigslist"? Some people do sell gas over there. Including Diesel.

Locked gas cap is very easy to crack open.

Ain't gonna explain how but it is damn easy. You can try and see for yourself, by using your head.

Best is locked gas door not cap. But again, it won't deter thieves because they could use cordless drill and drill your tank and drain to empty. It has happened already.

Mine, if one steals and thinks it is gasoline have fun screw their gas engine.

nobody said anything about gas cap cover. I don't think I've ever seen one.

There are many different ways to get gas out of tank, some of them are dangerous even if gas door is locked.

My advise, forget these locking gas cap gimmick, it may save even more money in the long run if not purchase one.

Safest way to lock gas is park in garage. It is the least place thieves wants to try steal.

They probably sold it off fast rather that storing it. They caught them with 110 gallons so they were probably stealing it 2 - 55 gallon drums at a time.

My car doesn't have easy access to gas without key because my car's gas door closed until you access to driver seat to pull it to open.

For thieves - they have to break the door's window to pull the gas lift to make gas door opens.

Nah, there is other way without even breaking your door or even windows.

Best bet is park inside the garage.

Good luck to thieves and I doubt that they will drill the gas tank to take gas out without getting caught.

Garage - I can't leave my car in garage all time and I need have car to commute to college or other errands, even there are zero public transportation in my area.

Also, garage door can be broken by thieves too.

Ask your insurance agency, where is the safest place to park your vehicle. You will be surprised.

You could get insurance premium discount if you park your car in garage all the time.
Few years ago, I looked in statistics and I find very interesting, cars get stolen or things stolen from the car itself. Parked garage is 1% of all stolen cases occurs! Only 1%? Wow thats very low and yes lowest.

Thieves usually don't want to break inside garage because they hate making noise and find nothing in garage so they usually don't bother garages.

Other option is all electric car, and that is not great option, having diesel car probably the best, because they usually have less than ten gallon tank.

I only parked in garage when I was home, not university. The university have parking lot or parking deck, neither of them are secured but they have students, campus polices and parking enforcers roam around to check.

Garage and parking lot is different. Parking deck isn't even considered garage. Your right, they aren't secured but prone to parking violation tickets. Go figure!

yea - my friend's car was at fenced private parking spot while interning at Congress. got broke in and his expensive radar detector was stolen.

Had my gas stolen from my driveway late at night, several times years ago......they used a cut-off water hose...Found out it was some neighborhood teenagers...So I stopped filling up my tank...just put in a few dollars of gas at a time...

:hmm:...So now, if somebody wants to break my gas line, since you can't open the gas lock except from inside the car and I keep it locked....they sure as hell aren't gonna get much gas from my tank....so I keep my lawn mower canister full of gas in case I happen to find my tank empty, enuf gas to make it to the station.

The gas lock caps are too easy to crack and I used had for 2 years, so no more.

I was victim of gas theft at Walmart parking and the gas was closer to E rather than clocked at little more than half.
