Tons of trucking jobs ... that nobody wants

Why do many people not want those jobs? Is it too much time away from family?

Dangerous road conditions? Poor work hours?

Pay not worth the hours they'll have to put in work?

My son-in-law was a long-distance trucker for a while. He didn't like the time away from the family. Now, because of his leg amputation, it would be harder for him to maintain the CDL. He's happier with a job closer to home.

I'm not sure about profound deaf people could get CBL, however HoH people are qualify if they have decent hearing from hearing aids.

In Alabama, deaf people could drive school bus (small to big) with specified license but only in statewide so they can't interstate like from Alabama to Georgia. I met one deaf man who worked at ASD and he told me that full deaf people aren't allowed to drive semi truck or 18 wheel truck, but they are ok with school bus.

Im sure you must be able to hear CB radio so Im not qualified to be long-haul trucker..sounds like a fun job..cant believe it takes eight weeks in trainin and six thousand dollars..nobody can afford that especially unemployed men..just too stressful.

I think there is one deaf member from DVTV driving a semi-truck.

The Standard DOT medical exam requires the person to "hear a forced whisper at 10 feet away" NAD has already got 45 Deaf truckers waivers for their CDL's. see NAD website for more or for assistance if you want to get a CDL. many Deaf could take advantage of these jobs if the USDOT changed the hearing requirement.. great job for those who don't want to or are unable go to college too

Or women ... but you are exactly right.

Many of the large trucking companies will hire you, train you and repay your tuition if you stay with them for a certain amount of time... They even pay you while you are training.. If DOT would drop the stupid hearing requirement it could open up jobs for thousands of Deafies...

They had the same issue with Diabetes but that was removed after discrimination lawsuits.. If I ever get around to needing a CDL I will apply and then sue the DOT when they deny my medical.. I think that is what NAD is basically doing now...

I had no idea I couldn't drive a semi-either... Unless I got a waiver...

Plus that method of assessment is stupid. also it says hear, not understand a whisper.

What they want you hearing is things like problems with brakes squealing/on fire, a wheel or rim with a tire gone off it, or other hazards, since you are driving a very large vehicle with disastrous consequences if you lose control because of a mechanical failure.

However, I have had to pull over a hearing truck driver with no trailer attached when I saw one of his rear axles with a seized brake on one side smoking. He apparently didn't hear it (it may not be possible over the motor and road noise).

I heard on the news that there are not enough quantified drivers to fill the jobs.

What about class B license? Are deaf people allowed to obtain class B license? I'm curious.

I remember I was watchin first 48. This long-haul trucker was murdered right in his cab at trucking rest-stop. A local pimp shot him and stole his wallet. Detectives found him and his hooker right across the street where the motel was. Im sure hookers prey on truckers daily and I wouldnt want to be one of them. Winter can be brutal, forget it. I do watch ice-road truckers on history channel. An ace had no clue his back tire was wobbling and a trucker cb'ed the guy and warned him about the tire. He pulled over immediately b/c it was too dangerous.

Nope, any commercial drivers license in any state requires a USDOTMedical/ Physical. some states you can get a non-commercial class B or and RV class A depending on each state and its mandates

What is the largest vehicle/trailer combination that a deaf person can drive? It depends on the state. In Texas, you can apply for Classified Driver Licenses A, B, C for driving large vehicles non-commercially. If you are hauling for a living, you have to get the commercial license.

Class A driver license permits a person to drive any vehicle or combination
of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or
more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle(s) being towed
is in excess of 10,000 pounds; including a vehicle included in Class B or
Class C, except a motorcycle or moped.

Wow. It suck to be us! I wanted to learn to fly small plane, but I think FAA won't allow us. :|

Deaf people can fly private planes.

As for the thread regarding truck drivers, I wouldn't want to be a truck driver because I'd be away from my family, it wouldn't fit with my purposes in life, and it'd be such a hassle to deal with road and weather conditions.
