Apple Store In Georgia Refuses To Sell iPad, iPhone To Farsi-Speaking Customer, Citing Company Policy

PROHIBITED DESTINATIONS The U.S. holds complete embargoes against Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria

The exportation, reexportation, sale or supply, directly or indirectly, from the United States, or by a U.S. person wherever located, of any Apple goods, software, technology (including technical data), or services to any of these countries is strictly prohibited without prior authorization by the U.S. Government. This prohibition also applies to any Apple owned subsidiary or any subsidiary employee worldwide.
[The] 19-year-old woman is a U.S. citizen living in the country, who just happens to also speak the language spoken in a country that is the subject of a trade embargo. This would be like the Apple store refusing to sell to anyone who speaks Spanish because they might have defected from Cuba. And are Apple employees asking every Korean customer whether they were born in North or South Korea?

Funny, Apple store allows to sell apple items to deaf people who can't talk or oral speech except foreigners. ha

She told the clerk about buying the iPad as a gift to ship to Iran. That doesn't make it discrimination? but iPad does not come with a keyboard for Middle Eastern languages.

I don't think all Apple Stores in USA do that. I'm surprised that Apple Store in GA treated that way.

Some PC manufacturers would encourage people to sign an agreement not to sell/export to different country - probably something to do with embargo. But I'm not sure why they (Apple Store) refused to sell to anyone who speak different language, even through United States does not have official language.

iPad regional format has Arabic language for all Arab counties but Iran is not listing because language is Farsi speaking.

If she told the clerk that she was going to send it to a prohibited country, then the clerk would be obligated to follow the law and not sell it.

Many people around the world speak and read English, so I don't think the keyboard would be a determining factor.

I heard this case yesterday from another AD member.
I thought they're not supposed to sell to the country, but a person is OK?

How did the clerk know she was shipping it to Iran if she was buying it in the US?

If she bring iPad without box for traveling to Iran, Iran custom s not allowing her to enter it. Right?

I found YouTube video clip. "Apple Customer Denied iPad For Being Iranian" subject.

There is definitely a legal case with those people. The people didn't say they were shipping to Iran or those banned countries. They only talked to each other in the language.

What's going on with Apple? Why the ban? Racism or some issues?

I traveled with cruise ship to Mexico. I bought a Cigar imported from Cuba but, U.S. custom don't allowed it as anti-communist policy.

Our UPS/FEDEX/DHL/whatever usually request us to declare what's in the box and US Custom may check it with x-ray to see what content. I'm sure they can prevent it from reaching Iran once they know what's contain in the package. The question is: with US embargo against Iran, will we able to ship anything to Iran? I doubt it.

I doubt Iran's custom care what you bring in as long it's not something that are against their religion (i.e. booze, etc...).

I think she have case of discrimination. Racism, maybe, discrimination is more likely.

Not anti-communist policy - it's trade embargo between USA and Cuba. Anything that made in Cuba are not allowed to import here.
