Surgery seems to be an extreme option at any time when you are dealing with children. Sometimes it's necessary, but it's still extreme.
CI is surgery. IN YOUR BRAIN (eeesh). Glasses is just.... glasses. Put 'em on, take 'em off, wear them, don't, walk in to any store or buy them online- and nobody so much as gives you a shave so you can wear them. CI- they cut into your head, right?
And while there is a surgical option for fixing vision problems, it has risks (I have a friend who is blind in one eye because of lasik surgery), and I don't think it's commonly pushed on parents of young children.
My question was about the philosophy around choosing not to "fix" deafness, not about the intrusive medical stuff.
When I asked the original question, it was because some people have said they do not want to correct the non-functioning ears simply because they are not ashamed of their deaf child, or advising others not to seek correction because, again, it is telling the child he/she is "broken" and they should be proud to have a deaf child, so let the child be who he/she is.
Also, it's been said that parents CI their child because the PARENT is doing it for THEMSELVES, because they don't want a deaf child.
That made me think of my defective eyes and my parents decision to have it corrected. I know in my heart that they did the glasses/contacts/soon Lasic for ME, so my eyes would be able to do what I have them for, which is to see better. They didn't do it because they were ashamed to have a daughter who could see faces only as a blurr. They did it so that I would be able to see and use those eyes that are one of our natural senses.
Some deaf may say to their deaf children "it's good you can't hear because the sound s of thunder and barking dogs will bother you."
It made me think, what if my parents didn't get me eyeglasses when I was 4 and instead told me "it's good you can only see in a blur because there many ugly things in the world that you'd be better off not seeing, like dog poop on the street and bald men".
I can understand not wanting CI because of the medically invasive surgery.
I'm working on understanding not wanting CI because thunder might annoy you.
I am understanding that Deaf culture is a proud group that fears abandonment by their own people. Sometimes I feel there are some deaf that would deliberately choose to have their newborn's cochleas snipped to make them proudly Deaf, if it were allowed.
I'm not judging anyone for good or bad. It's my observation. Each one here has their opinions for a reason, most likely from how they were raised, and I respect every single feeling that they have, honest.
