Who ate dog food as kids?

Fess up! That starts with me.

When I was a kid, I ate the Gainsburger patties and the colored small Milkbones. I never touched the canned dog food, though. I recall eating some Purina dry dog chow bits, but that one was not my favorite. I still remember what they taste like over 40 years later!
 
:giggle: I have to admit as a kid I liked those little multi colored biscuits my aunt had for her dog. But I had to share with him. We both got into trouble for it. :P
 
As I kid I don't recall ever eating dog or cat food nor as adult either!
 
My parents barely even let me have Coca Cola, let alone dog food!

This is actually a very interesting topic. For a lot of older generation (first generation) immigrants who came to America, if you read or talk to them about it they'll likely mention how they had to struggle on cat food or dog food to survive.

I've heard it from some of my relatives as well.

But to eat it willingly without financial hardships - nope, do not want. Maybe you're alone on that one, deafdrummer :io:
 
Naisho, Jiro, you must be young 'uns... This was back in the day before helmets, knee and elbow pads, soccer moms. The 60s people, the 60s... I don't think you understand. I watched Mom take one out of a box, unwrap it, and put it in the dog's bowl, and I assume it was food for everyone, since I saw her put our food scraps in his bowl occasionally. You have to remember, no one knew I was deaf until I was seven and a half, and this was when I was between two and four, when I could figure out how to unwrap the thing. When she told me no, I thought she meant, "No, it's his food (without words)," so I would sneak it out under the kitchen sink or the floor cabinet reserved for dog food so I wouldn't take his food. I didn't know she meant, "No, that is food for dogs only, don't eat it."

I was curious at the time, and we were getting into things around the house. My older nephew did the same thing... My sister was relieved when she found out I was doing the same thing.

but of course, hell no, would I eat that today, vegan or not.

Ate dog food? Not really. Tasted it? Yes.

I wanted to know why my dogs loved eating their dog food, so I bit off a small piece to see. It tasted like cardboard....no flavor whatsoever. Milk Bone biscuits have even less flavor.

I tasted canned dog food once. Had a combination of hotdog/liverwurst/bologna flavor. Not very appealing.

Keep in mind that the average dog in the USA eats better and more than many poor people in underdeveloped countries. Dog food here in the USA has more nutrition than what some people are forced to eat.

Tried the "white lightn' " as a kid....Peach Snuff and Redman Chewing Tobacco....was horrible!.....Even the Prince Albert "you roll 'em cigarettes"....munched on hard yellow corn that we fed the chickens with...even slopped the hogs...but fell short of eating dog food.....:wave:

I'm not a young'un, and I grew up during the 50's and 60's, yet I never had any interest in eating dog food. :lol:
 
Since drummer mentioned they ate it as a kid; I guess we can let him get away with this one, right? ;)

So deafdrummer, you never answered the more important question we're all wondering. At least green427 did, but I'm wondering how were those Milkbones? They must've been really good that my dog used to come jumping for some.

I don't know to describe the flavor... It was most likely not anything like you've ever eaten. When you chewed on it for a while and kept your mouth open, it had an airy aftertaste that was not that bad, as you could smell it, too. GrayEagle, can you describe the flavor on these things any better?
