This is awful. It's bad enough that they stole her dog. Why did they have to kill it and leave it there?

Autistic girl's service dog found dead

MONCKS CORNER — The body of an autistic girl's service dog that was reported missing last week was dumped in their front yard Sunday night.

The mother said it was clear that somebody killed him.

'They killed our dog and dropped it off in our yard,' said Kelly Noland, the mother of the girl. 'He had been hit in the face with a bat. He was still warm.'

Toby, a 3-year-old black and white American bull terrier, was snatched from the family's front yard Tuesday morning. He was specially trained to help their autistic child, 9-year-old Allie Noland. Toby made sure Allie was safe and often helped her communicate.

'She is not the same without her buddy,' her mother said last week.

The family does not plan to get another dog any time soon, Noland said. 'It's just too much heartache,' she said.

Toby was snatched from the property on Gaillard Road while the family was preparing for school last Tuesday morning, according to the family. They put out notices through local media outlets asking for tips and offering a reward.

Some neighborhood children waiting for a school bus about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday saw a black Dodge car stop and a white woman with blond hair take the dog, according to a Berkeley County Sheriff's Office report. The witnesses could not provide a license tag number, the report said.

Sickening. But what I want to know is why was the service dog left outside unattended?

People are just sick. When I was a kid there was a satanic cult that met a few blocks away from my house . They often did the same thing. They would steal a pet and kill it and then return the pet and hang it on a stake in the front yard. Happened often.

I hope they catch the people responsible.

Poor dog, poor family.

It is disgusting ...what people are capable of...

They were getting ready for school, so maybe they just let him out for a few minutes?!

There has been some gossip from local people who suspect that the family is involved. I hope that's not the case. This story is bad enough as it is. :(

From the mom:

The story is plain and simple our beloved dog was stolen and we were out in town hanging up more flyers when we recieved a call from two children walking by our house that Toby was in our yard at the ditch.(everyone in my area was looking for him daily). I rushed home to find him dead with a broken left jaw. No other marks except to to the left side of his head. His body was still limp. We are devistated and are still offer reward for who did this to my daughter's buddy and a huge part of our family. If you think there is more to this story then you probably have the information we need!

I wonder if the dog wasn't dumped there but maybe had been injured elsewhere, and found his way back home, then collapsed, dead? It would seem very risky for the perps to return with him to the scene of their crime.

:dunno:

Did they ever catch the people and put them in jail?

Maybe it was a fenced property. It said nothing about dog being left outside unattended. Only that it was snatched from their property.

The only way my dog would get snatched is if it were unattended. I watch them closely when outside and never have them within snatching range without a leash anyway, in which case anyone trying to steal my dog would get their ass kicked.

Sickening story, but unfortunately it could have been prevented.

Maybe they just let the dog out to pee? :dunno:

Personally, I wouldn't let my dogs out to the unfenced part of my yard without being with them, period.

p.s. Gaillard Road, Moncks Corner, SC, is a rural area.

Tonight's TV news said there are no new leads.

The state legislature wants to submit a bill that would make it a felony to harm service and police dogs. Right now, it's a misdemeanor.

Makes sense considering the cost to train the animals, not to mention the importance of the bond.

That is disgustingly sick.

Surely there must be some appropriate law covering not only stealing and killing the dog, but the mental anguish caused by the family finding the still-warm body of their dog in their front yard. This just turns my stomach. I can't imagine the horrific shock and grief the family must be going through.

As of today, no new leads on who did this.

This doesn't sound like family to me. If it were family, it doesn't sound like they would return the dog to see their daughter's anguish. Besides, there are already enough humane ways to kill a pet who's costing you money other than beating him to death. (that was for the post regarding family involvement) It sounds like a "we don't want you here" kind of thing. I mean, the animal wasn't cut. It was beaten. There goes sacrificial slaughter. It wasn't hit by a ca. That sounds like someone who is releasing a lot of anger on something or someone. I could be way off on this but it sounds like someone saying "Get out of town." People do all kinds of crazy crap when they're scared. I wouldn't read too much into it though. I haven't seen all the details and to start a rumor based on what I've seen in the case (absolutely nothing) would be a premature response.

We already have this in Kentucky. If you kill a service animal, you get the same punishment as if you had killed a person in that particular branch of service. So, if you poison a police dog, you have just poisoned a police officer. You now get the same amount of jail time.
