Shopping for a ring...

To me, insurance would be better. Add it as a "rider" to whatever existing home/rental policies you have. You can state a value, conditions (depending on insurance companies), etc to cover loss of the ring, diamond, etc. Actual repairs to a ring aren't common, except in the case of securing the prongs that hold the diamond in place and even that isn't expensive. I had a wedding ring for many years.

Edit: Adding it as a rider would mean you can change that at any time that you can make policy changes which is practically any time.
 
Do you know your intended's preference? That would be really helpful.

I have a beautiful enagement ring but I don't wear it all of the time. My wedding band has much more sentimental value, and I wear it most of the time. Consider the wedding band when you chose the engagement ring. Your intended may consider the band more important. She may even prefer to have matching bands without a diamond solitaire.

Good luck! Where ever you get the ring, make sure that you can exchange it in case your intended's taste is different than what you selected.

I talked to her. I asked her if she wanted to be surprised with a ring or should we shop together for a ring. She said she would prefer to be surprised.

I guess you could go to your favorite search engine (google, yahoo, etc) and see what comes up on "diamonds fair trade".

I agree. I think the wrong people are benefitting, namely the folks that own companies like De Beers and not the folks like the ones getting married.

But another way of looking at it is that people like you and me are not romantic. :shock: Don't know about you, but I have been accused of that once or twice.

Anyway, its Derek's and his fiance's life. They are the ones that have to be happy.

Well, I am a romantic person but don't believe in dirty business of selling rings for so much money. Remember, what about the poor people? The marriage is about rich AND poor so they forgot poor people can't afford rings. Sometimes poor women like nice and fancy rings, some poor women don't give a shit that it's a 25 cent ring from a 25 cent vending machine.
 
Yeah, one of my friend just spent $5,500 on 1 ring and 2 bands. I know that I don't want to spend this much. I do want to get a good ring. WE've both discussed this and that neither one wants me to go broke just to get her a ring. Many women will tell you spend the $$ on ring or find someone else!! I'm vey grateful that my girlfriend told me to take time. Pick a ring. Anything will work. Please don't go broke buying a ring.
 
You can insure your ring under your home owners insurance that's what my aunt and uncle did.

As for the ring I think you should look at jewelry stores not a website..I'd rather be able to physically shop for a ring and be able to go back to the store if I need to...

Often that appeals to people, but it's definitely worth looking online too. Bluenile.com has an excellent reputation, and you can put together your own ring, choosing cut, clarity, color, and carat weight, in line with your budget. For instance, you might choose a larger stone that is slightly imperfect in clarity or color (imperfections only visible to a jeweler with a magnifying glass!), or a smaller stone that is completely perfect.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. I'm planning on buying myself diamond earrings sometime this next year, and will certainly compare what I can get from Bluenile vs. the local store.

Most jewelry stores have a huge mark-up, and you're not getting the benefit of any better quality stones from them than you would from a reputable online offering.

I personally buy all my real jewelry from online. And the warranty really all depends on you, I mean do you think you'll need it if it gets lost or stolen? I would get the 1 year warranty just to be on the safe side. You don't have to bring in the ring for cleaning, and repairs unless you wanted it to be shiny like new; I don't take my rings in for cleaning. I just bought a cleaning/polishing rag from Zales, and everything still looks new.Then again I always take care of all my jewelery, and I only wear my real jewelry on special occasions. If I were you I'd get the shortest warranty they have,and when it expires and you think you still need it, then just renew it. Hope I helped some.

I appreciate the feedback. Maybe diamonds will fall out in first few months, but after a year or so, it should be fine.
