To me, insurance would be better. Add it as a "rider" to whatever existing home/rental policies you have. You can state a value, conditions (depending on insurance companies), etc to cover loss of the ring, diamond, etc. Actual repairs to a ring aren't common, except in the case of securing the prongs that hold the diamond in place and even that isn't expensive. I had a wedding ring for many years.
Edit: Adding it as a rider would mean you can change that at any time that you can make policy changes which is practically any time.
