Fear! We (and our laptops) could get thrown out of Starbucks?!

Down here, people are in starbucks studying and chatting all the time. It's just not so crowded that managers feel the need to throw people out. At restaurants, it's a different story.

That's a selfish thing to do. Lot of people social with other people at starbucks, study and do homework there. Remember, many college students cannot afford internet at home or don't have internet at home. Some people like the noise and people around when studying. That's why there are tables, sofas, etc for people to use. Not everyone doesn't have to order anything from Starbucks to be there.

Don't college libraries have wifi for students. I know that dorms have it.

Not all college students live in dorms. Some live in apartments with no internet, etc. You can't control what people are doing at Starbucks, it's their business.

If people didn't order drinks and food at Starbucks, how would they stay in business? If the local Starbucks has to close for lack of business, where will the students and social users go?

The Starbucks managers CAN control what people are doing within their businesses because it IS their business.

Starbucks not public venue. Private business. Owner well wiin rights to say Internet for customers only. They pay bill, after all!

Well, for socials or students. Maybe 50% to 70% of them order something from Starbucks. The rest don't. It is not a big impact. Some starbucks have locks for the bathrooms to prevent homeless people using the bathrooms like in downtown Seattle.

If they don't order something, even something small, they shouldn't take up seating. It IS a big impact for a food service business if only 30-50% of their "customers" buy something. They still have to pay 100% of their overhead.

sequoias - if you owned a restaurant - would you appreciate if 30 to 50% of your customers were non-paying and thus taking business away from those who would have paid?

Nonpaying customers take up the seats that paying customers could have used. The starbucks in my neighbourhood, i walk past it quite a bit and it's always full. If 30 to 50% of them were non-paying, that is quite a big profit loss for Starbucks because people like me who would have been a paying customer didn't come in because the cafe looked full.

doesn't matter if it's a big impact or not, freeloaders are not good business.

If you can't afford internet, it's just as easy to go to a public library as it is a Starbucks.
They are set up to let you use free WIFI, funded by taxpayer dollars, instead of a business who needs to make money.

Then why are starbucks and other local coffee shops letting many deaf socials, different type of socials happening around the US happen? They haven't kicked them out. I haven't heard of a case of like that before.

I think Starbucks opened up with the intention of providing a place for people to order coffee and lounge in a relaxing environment. Then comes the WiFi and the bad economy. I think corporate heads at Starbucks realized that tye lounging idea isn't helpful anymore. Times change.

Because of budget cuts our public libraries are hardly open anymore. That's why I wondered about college libraries.

Maybe there will be a influx of management policies not allowing any type of social events to happen in their business. Things do change. When I went to a deaf social at Starbucks, I usually do order drinks or snack. Same thing when I go to McDonalds, I do order food and sit down and eat. They have free wifi as well. Deaf socials or other type of events would have to go elsewhere like at a church or in a mall, etc.

There are certain restaurants that accommodate asl socials. It's smart marketing. Some places kick people out. Then we have to move the party elsewhere. Lately, it's been the icecream shop. Yum! It's still hot down here.
