California - education options for UHL?

Get this, I know even though they're a school for the deaf, they also have accepted people who are 100% hearing and do not know sign language.

They fit in very well.

Since 90% of deaf children have hearing parents who don't know sign, the deaf children likely do not know a great deal of sign before going to a deaf school.

If this school only admits those who already know sign, then the only deaf children attending that school would be DoD.

I do not think that most of the deaf children there woudl be DoD btw.

Exactly. And since so many of those children do not have the Deaf School as their parental preferred and initial placement, they generally come in the later elementary grades from a mainstream and/or oral only placement where they have never had the opportunity to learn ASL.

Let's see, 90% of deaf children are deaf of hearing. That is easily extrapolated to at least 89.5% of the deaf children entering a deaf school do not come from an environment where ASL is the primary form of communication.

They accept students who demonstrate the ability to learn and use ASL as their primary mode of instruction/communication.

Proficiency in ASL is not a requirement. Just that they demonstrate the ability to use it as their primary mode of communication and instruction.

The OP would need to clarify, but it is my perception that ASL is not his primary mode of communication.

So? No where does the OP state that the child has an inability to learn ASL as the primary form of communication in the educational environment. That clause is there as a result of access to the curriculum, not as a social factor.

That is the beauty of being bilingual. Primary form of communication can change based on environment and circumstance.

What's so shocking about that? As deaf and visual, they are ASL whizzes in practically no time.

In this thread alone, you are going up against people with north of two hundred years worth of experience of the deaf schools - and they're all telling you that you are wrong.

Here we go again. It is all about how many posters telling you that your singular opinion is incorrect? Yet, we are all wrong and nit picking, while you alone, remain right. See the problem here?

And I have seen the same at Deaf Schools in many areas. It is truly amazing to watch.
