Were you lied by schools and/or parents that you were "hearing?"

you are a hearing parent and you were the first person to respond! Irony much?

again, as soon as you leave i will.

I am not responding except to explain the type of data that the OP is trying to collect, and the OP themself has stated that I am correct. You are using the thread to make something else all about you. In defense of this data being collected and used for positive research purposes, I am now reporting your attempts to take the thread off topic, and request that you be dealt with by the mods.

Hearing parent is not her function in Alldeaf.

It is really telling that the OP is asking for responses from the D/deaf who have experienced the educational environment as a deaf child yet a couple of hearing parents have to jump in and start defending their decisions and their beliefs regarding their children. Can't even let the D/deaf respond and accept that their responses are valid and worthwhile in determining policy for the deaf.

Stop it you two. This is not a thread for you to justify your decisions for your deaf children, who are too young, but the way, to even respond to this request. This is a thread for the deaf to state what their perceptions were as deaf children. Let the deaf answer and save your defensiveness for another thread.

Really? My post answering on behalf of my child and gently suggesting that the OP's question is a bit value-laden and presupposes that being told one is "normal" is bad and confuses identity later in life is somehow stopping others from answering? But you've posted a few more times than I, and you are a hearing parent, too -- and yet you, a hearing parent, responded on behalf of others before we joined you, and responded on behalf of our deaf children, having, unlike you, first hand knowledge of what was conveyed. And we didn't defend ourselves, we fully acknowledged that we committed this act of misleading our children to think they are what the OP termed "normal/regular".

Since Jillio actually works in the field, she does service here in her spare time.

I don't really see the parallel with her and parents of young children here.

So? What does that have to do with the question being asked of the D/deaf in this attempt to collect data? The OP did not ask for your evaluation of her research question, nor for your feelings as a hearing parent. Your input is not appropriate in this thread and is just another attempt to make everything about a couple of very vocal, very annoying hearing parents. Let the D/deaf answer the question. It was not addressed to you, and GAWD knows they certainly don't need you answering for them.

Hearing parent is not her function in Alldeaf.

except that everything she does and says is colored by that experience. There is nothing closer to a mother's heart than her own child. If she is right, that parents do things to convince themselves that the choices they make for their children are right, NONE of her opinions are not touched by her experience of raising an ASL using, non-implanted Deaf child.

sssshhhhh........ it would be best if your daughter answers this question for herself instead of you answering it for her.

In my case, it wasn't me that was lied to, it was my parents in a way. They were told that I could be just like a hearing student. They were told to never let me learn ASL. They were told to treat me like a hearing person and to make no allowances. At school I was always placed in the "center-front" seat. We were always seated in alphabetical order and for some reason, the "M's" always managed to be in a back seat or in the center, middle. I was always sitting with the "C's" and that made me stick out like a sore thumb.

Ditto here for my parents. I think they were in denial about my problems with my hearing. They said I had to learn to speak and not sign because that's what most people do.

They believed that if I learned to speak, I could function just like the "regular" kids. That's what I called the hearing kids. Regular kids who didn't have deafness. It wasn't' till i went to VSDB that I started to call everyone who could hear Hearing.

They couldn't understand why things started to fall apart in the fifth grade and they called me lazy because I didn't always want to slave away at my homework and often they would scream at me while I was doing homework till it was midnight or even later. They told me I had to work hard or I wouldn't be able to get in college. This was back in the 4th grade.

My mother was very angry about my lack of progress and she told me I was falling the fifth grade. I asked my fifth grade teacher if I was failing and she said no. I was very puzzled about the whole thing. I did fail sixth grade due to issues with an undx'd ADD.

Hey Botts, I like your new caption under your avtar.

you're answering this question for your daughter. perhaps you should let her answer this question for herself. I find it interesting that you and Grendel jumped in. So defensive....

She did, if you notice from our response, she actually corrected me on her age. Her reading comprehension and spelling are only at the kindergarten level, though, so I help her out a bit by reading aloud to her and typing her answers.

Yep. Her POV may turn out to be quite different from Grendal's POV.

not the same. wait till she's older enough. You should know better that kids at that age are too young to understand this kind of question.

You need to be quiet and quit provoking, at least until you also attain a PhD

i thought jillio has didn't have her phd yet....and i wan't aware that having a degree was a requirement for posting. If that is so, i think the site is going to shrink fast!

Her ph.d is what enabled her to understand OP's position and clarified for you. Look at the beginning of thread and Grendel was unclear about OP's question. and then look at OP's reply to Jillio's clarification at Post #7. it was spot-on. then you pitched in and you're still confused.... which was clarified at Post #23.

Therein.... you started getting defensive and throwing hissy fits.
