Teen Football Player Dies While At Camp
Teen Football Player Dies While At Camp - Jacksonville News Story - WJXT Jacksonville

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 16-year-old football player from Fitzgerald, Ga., died Tuesday after he was found unresponsive at a football camp in Columbia County.

The Fitzgerald (Ga.) High School Football team was conducting a football camp at O'Leno State Park in southern Columbia County, near High Springs.

After a morning of practice, Donteria Searcy was found in his cabin unresponsive at about 11:15 a.m.

Searcy was taken by rescuers to Lake City Medical Center, and after attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office has sent grief counselors to the football camp to assist the team.

Detectives with the Sheriff's Office are investigating the teen's death. Detectives said no foul play is suspected.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

The Fitzgerald High School Football team arrived in Columbia County on Friday for the football camp that it was facilitating. The team intends to return to Georgia on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

that not good signs for football players to practices during high heat but must wait till cool off first

AR law prohibits all sports practices of any kind if the heat index is above 100 degrees. With actual temps already above 100 degrees here, there is NO WORKOUTS for all schools, however some schools are getting around this by having practice at 9:00 at night under the lights then again at 5:30 am. The kids are told to take it easy and sleep during the day so they won't be exhausted, and to chug water like there is no tomorrow.

I would agreed!

My time, we practiced inside the gym with helmet and gym shoes to do the respiration drills during the heatwave. Everything went fine during that time.
