your family have experience colonoscopy

before colonoscopy test

if you cant eat must drink include juice as empty stomatch but my mom took it and also my 71 years old grandmother took it also....

i learn that my aunt bev got colonoscopy few days ago but she not 50 years old but she is 46 and she aint feeling good so but they took test makes sure she have no cancer im hope she will healthy.

Yup, clear liquid is required for rest of day before colonoscopy and you are required to eat low residue diet in 3 to 5 days before colonoscopy.

Hubby and I are both over 50 but we haven't yet had colonoscopies. We requested them but the VA hospital won't do them unless we are in a high risk category, which we are not. Instead, they give us an annual take-home-and-mail-in home stool test, ugh.

After the scandal about contaminated colonoscopies that were done at other VA hospitals, I'm glad that we didn't get them. Some patients ended up with hepatitis and/or AIDS.

You could do it via private non-profit hospital and I think that Tricare will cover it, it is more safe than VA does.

Colonoscopy is recommended for adults who are over 50, sometime, much earlier if you experience any GI problems, especially change in BM habit.

FIL had numerous colonoscopies due to polyps. He had numerous polyps removed and finally reached 5 years clear. Hubby had a colonoscopy done, they found 2 polyps, removed them, nothing to worry, he went back yearly for 2 more colonoscopies and they were clear. He has not been checked in 7 years. I had one done and nothing to worry about and since I have no history in the family, I was told I did not need to do it again. My kids will have to have them after they turn 35 (according to FIL's doc) due to the family history.

:( I'm getting my third one done in a couple of weeks. I had my first two at 50 & 51 (because polyps were found the first time). Was told to come back in 4 years for another one. Not looking forward to drinking the lovely prep stuff, but it's only for a short time compared to what I'd have to go through if I didn't have it done and I did develop cancer.

I will have a EGD and colonoscopy on July 6 for need to rule out the GI problems and ensure that's all normal before I left to Gally, I do have few GI problems, especially some loose stools and some discomfort for 2 weeks, just after constipation so my doctor and family believed it was stress. I'm experiencing some improvement on GI and my doctor saying it will take weeks to get normal again.

I do have family history of polyps and I had heard about some young people got polyps, that's rare.

Update: I finished the EGD and colonoscopy in last late morning and it was okay but had a lot of gases and discomfort after wake up. The result for my EGD and colonoscopy are all normal and it is one of best thing that my doctor had seen, even much better than last year.

I believe that frequent loose stools and discomfort are related to stress or GI disturbance so it will take about weeks to return to normal again, also constipation could be happen in random times and better to drink plenty of fluids to prevent it and some medicines do cause as side effect.

The bowel prep was TERRIBLE, I cannot stand to drink 64 oz of Gatorade with Miralax and 4 Dulcolax tablets anymore and got very sick after done with all of them. It was a lot of discomfort and bad cramps last night but I feel much better today.

Glad everything looked ok. I'm getting my done next Tuesday and am not looking forward to the wonderful prep. But I know its necessary.

My Dad had a colonoscopy @ age 50. It was normal. At age 60, he was supposed to have a follow up, and, didn't. At age 64, he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer.

Dad had to have surgery to remove the tumor that was nearly blocking his intestine. Dr wanted to also follow up with chemo, but couldn't due to pre-existing health issues. As a result, it's a given that his cancer will eventually return. :(

The moral of the story: Regardless of how uncomfortable or embarrassing the procedure may be, have it done and ON TIME; every time. It could save your life!

Just put all prep stuff in plastic bag and tied it then put in cabinet so go to fun activities that make you so happy. j/k

I started to wake up at near end of colonoscopy and I was feel like something went in my anus then in last minute, the doctor pulled colonoscopy out of anus. It was very discomfort and gross. After that, I was moved to recovery room and get up and put clothes on it then left the hospital.

Yesterday was so-so because of diarrhea because prep hasn't wear off in around 24 hours and my hemorrhoids got swelled and pain. :ugh:

Nah, I'll take my bitter pill (rather 64 oz drink) and get it over with.
The 1st one I had done (in a hospital), about 5 years ago, I woke up before we left the "exam" room, but the scope had already been removed and they were just getting ready to move me to recovery.
The 2nd one (4 years ago-in an outpatient facility) I woke up in the recovery room. This is the place I'll be getting it done next week.

My daughter, who's a nurse tech student and has seen the procedure, wants to watch mine. I have no problem with that, so we will ask the nurse/doctor if it's ok.

How About AIDS?

Due to the recent extensive coverage of AIDS by the media, some patients have expressed the concern that they might, in fact, contract AIDS through this examination. Be assured that this is not the case. All our instruments are thoroughly cleaned and undergo high-level disinfection after each use. Only techniques known to kill all disease-causing bacteria and viruses, including the hepatitis and AIDS virus, are employed in this process.

Oh I see, taking pills with water is less harsher than liquid prep but not know about how long prep will worn off with pills.

I had colonoscopy last year and I didn't wake up until it arrived in recovery room so this year, I took much less anesthesia then went worn off so quickly, unlike last year, it took several hours to worn off with very sleepy. Now, after known with result and will not have a colonoscopy again in future unless serious symptoms occur in future.

No, I meant the liquid prep. But I also don't drink a lot of liquids anyway, so drinking 64 ozs of anything is not going to be fun.

Oh really, the pills with 64 oz of water?

If you say so then it is much better than 64 oz of Miralax + Gatorade that I took due to thicken the liquid and more volume that cause to feel so ill in stomach area with nasty taste in mouth.

Water is just lighter and less volume, much easy for stomach.

Good luck with your colonoscopy and hopefully you don't feel bad during prep, I know it is no fun at all.

No, I meant the Miralax or whatever they're going to tell me to put in the liquid (should get the instructions in today's mail).

Ok, I got it now and I was confused about between pills and liquid that you mentioned.

I got prep from GI doctor office after seen with doctor and discuss about EGD and colonoscopy, there were 2 options - MoviPrep and Miralax/Gatorade, however I believe that patients could request the different prep if they are not satisfied or safe with either of liquid prep so they could get pills with plenty of waters.

If you are not happy with prep then ask a doctor for more options, if you are ok with it then go for it.

I got my instructions yesterday. I'm to get the Miralax/Gatoraid and the Ducolax pills and one other thing (to be taken 4 hours before the procedure...4:30 AM )
