Two laws just went into effect this weekend - Georgia's HB 87 and the following in Florida:

Reading the comments below the article, I found an interesting, and at the same time, repulsive remark:

I am sure it was meant as "tongue in cheek" but you never know ....
 
I am a Rand-loving, objectivist, dirty capitalist, and even I cannot stop myself from being completely repulsed by the vast majority of American "capitalists".

There is just something deeply wrong with these people.
 
It will be soon to be blocked by federal court and it is unconstitutional too, no doubt.

I agree. The remark I posted had me reeling. Now, I can understand not using tax money to enable druggies ... but the remark I posted took this whole situation in the complete wrong direction.

When you take money away from a meth addict - there are going to be a buttload of home invasions.
 
I see CNN has a "report abuse" button and the person who made the above comment is trying to defend himself.

So apparently other people don't find that kind of humor funny either.

TANF is already only given to parents who are raising minor children with full custody, and is only awarded when you are genuinely dirt-poor. This is not punishing drug users, it is punishing their children.

Poor people have to self medicate for a lot of reasons, not all (or even most) of them are druggies. If the difference between being able to go to work cleaning toilets, and being stuck in bed from pain is smoking some weed, most people with children will do it- especially since poor people in the US have virtually no access to an ongoing relationship with a physician, and even when they CAN see a doctor are often seen as drug seekers when trying to obtain pain diagnosis or management.

Should that person have their ability to house or feed their children taken away from them?

I am not sure what you have been exposed to ... so I can't say that dirt poor people who self medicate so they can clean toilets is ok or not.

Most of the druggies I have encountered do it for the simple reason that it started out as "recreational" then they became addicted and dependent on the drug to even function. That is a vastly different situation than the one in your description. I have seen friends since High School waste away on drug abuse ... I avoid them.
 
it's hilarious. I experimented with drugs in high school and I did not end up being addicted to them. I haven't done illegal drugs for over two decades. Have no desire at all.

not everyone becomes addicted to them. there is strong evidence suggesting that addicts have strong addictive personalities and they tend to get addicted to anything that makes them "high."

People with ADHD and bipolar disorders are notorious for being "addicted" to drugs because it helps them feel "medicated' with illegal drugs. I know one woman who smokes weed everyday since she was a teen yet she's very productive. She's a workaholic. Without weed, she'd be a bit off.

that is serious! dangerous! because reason banned for on addiction otherwise protect to clean up! important to implentation to people bad habit on addiction drug! illegal!
 
It appears that some have a very mistaken concept of drug use and abuse. It is not a character flaw, as some seem to think.

I have ADHD and I stay away from illegal drugs - especially heroin and cocaine because I can easily see myself getting hooked on these drugs.

My sister has ADHD too and she isn't interested into illegal drugs either.

Yet we still see people have an addiction problem that's so large and pervasive, it's no laughing matter. Sometimes people fool themselves saying they're not addicted to drugs, say drinking alcohol, by getting drunk every so often. It is an addiction problem but not necessarily on the scale of those who get drunk almost everyday that truly impair and interrupt their lives and the people around them. You we're lucky that you didn't get addicted to drugs. It's horrible to watch people's lives go down the drain and take their families down with them.
 
I've always wondered this. I know every state is different, but let's say someone who is on SSI gets caught and charged for illegal drugs, will their benefits get cut off?

You can get just as easily addicted to prescription medications, if not moreso. Legality is not an indicator of either safety or addiction potential.

Rich people get employed and make money using drugs because they can pay a doctor to prescribe it, legitimately or not, right dose or not. When they fail a UA, if they're even given one, they just produce a prescription and do just fine.

Poor people get fucked not only out of work, but even now government services, because they can't afford to have a legitimate prescriber of often the same medication, or even less addictive medications, and need to self medicate.

It has nothing to do with addressing the segment of the population that becomes dangerously addicted. These sorts of laws have everything to do with punishing poor people for the same thing that rich people get away with every day.
 
I am surprised serious on prove on psychiatrist to prove Social worker accept authority because not joke! must to amen tell truth have issues group personal handle or punishment to something medication illegal, Many people I Notice it states terrible!

Yup, you could lose the SSI/SSDI benefits if you used illegal drugs, also it is criminal offense.
