Is Deaf Culture still High Context?

I love how Jane Austen reveals her characters from their conversations. JK Rowling does the same thing. I feel like the people are real and that I know them. Every single character has a back story.

True, but where you learn is where you learn. I find it interesting that Danielle Steel has rewritten Dickens -- More than once.

And it was a Rex Stout novel where I realized everyone Archie Goodwin interviewed had a problem -- And it was not always him. It could just as easily be a woman who was trying to hang her clothes on washday and he was interrupting.

At one time I kept every book that ever influenced me in any way. There got to be so many of them there was no room for me. I had to get rid of them or move out.

So I moved.

I like the way you think!

That is funny. I added a sentence to make sure my meaning was clear. But you had already read the original and answered before I revised it.

Thank you.

Berry - Like jillio I like the way you think! Good books (or more accurately, their contents) are incredibly precious. In my house we have books piled all over the place as we've run out of bookshelf space.

I had the same option a year or two ago. I got a Kindle instead. :P

Back then "super computers" were just a mote in Asimov's eye. Let alone a Kindle.

Agreed. And I have a storage unit and and 2 office spaces filled with books to prove it!

But, alas! I have been drug into the 21st century screaming and kicking, and have gone paperless whenever possible. I, too, have a Kindle.:P

My daughter is getting a new Kindle or something and she is convincing me I need one just like it.

Come on, Berry! It really doesn't hurt!

If you keep it up I'll start talking about chaos versus order in relationship to contextual thinking and really drive this thread off the deep end.

You do! They're frakkin' awesome. (But for more on that, go look in the topic on the main chat *about* e-readers)

Is this classification re: high/low useful?

Very useful. Particularly because we live in a multicultural world, and it is always best to have a degree of understanding of the cultures and the impact on the member in interacting with people.

We see good examples of how that lack of understanding occurs on this forum on a daily basis.

Given the fact one is born into their parent's culture-does one really analzye their specific culture? Also, in keeping with the thread- how is "cultural deafness" so different in various other countries- USA vs say China?

More discussion in Sociology.

It is not a matter of the individual belonging to the culture analyzing it. It is about those outside the culture having an understanding of a culture for which they are unfamilar to facilitate communication and interaction from a multi-cultural standpoint. You can't just sit back and say, "Hey, this is my culture, do it my way!" Doesn't work.

Check out the Deaf community in a relatively small area of the world: Bali. You will see despite other significant differences, their Deaf culture maintains the same values and traditions that Deaf culture in the States does.
