Woman's Leg Severed By Flying Pressure Cooker

I think I will forgo buying myself a pressure cooker. I tend to get distracted and I don't need my dinner exploding all over my kitchen.

The old ones could be dangerous. The new ones, the "super cookers" where you can do pressure-cooking with very little water, are fine.

I LOVE mine. I use it most in winter, when we like beef stew and roasts and things like that more than we do in summer. Meat comes out SO tender. I can do a wonderful stew in about half an hour (not counting time to chop up the veggies) that would take 2 hours or more of simmering in a regular pot on the stove.

With the new mechanisms (a little pressure valve that lets off steam), they will not explode.

That is your choice, but they all have relief valves...they have had them for many years.

Pressure cookers have always scared the heck out of me. I have never used one because growing up I heard horror stories about them exploding.
Me, too. MIL gave us her old one a few years ago. We used it once, so we could tell her that we used it.

Honestly, between a Crock Pot, microwave, and convection oven, in addition to my stove, I have no need for a pressure cooker.

You need a grill, Reba. Some things you can't do as well on a stove. ;)

Hubby's in charge of the grill; it's a good sized propane one, with a burner included. Also, we have a propane deep fryer that we use (outdoors). :D

We have a fire pit outside, wood fire, that we use for cooking hot dogs and melting marshmallows.

You have it covered. :D Memorial weekend cookout is coming up soon. Are you getting some friends together?

No. I have to work all day, and Hubby has a PGR mission (funeral for a fallen soldier) to attend that day, and possibly escort.

Arghhh. Last night I left the cover to my ancient pressure cooker over a grill on the stove and accidentally turned the heat on. When I next checked it, there was a fire underneath the cover and I burned the seal. Gonna need to find a replacement on ebay I guess. :(

Are you serious or joshin' with us after all this discussion about pressure cookers and grills and stoves??

Seriously, if your cooker is old and this really happened, I'd toss the whole thing and buy a new one. Much safer. Magefasa is a good, sturdy brand.

Nope. I know demolition and pressure cookers are tame kitties.

I think I will stick to putting my stews and roasts and things like that in the crockpot before I leave for work and letting them cook all day and be ready when I get home.:giggle:

Tell that to the lady missing a leg.:P

Ouch. You're right, I need to take other things into consideration.
My mom had a pressure cooker explode one time long ago. Food all over the ceiling, but that was about it.

I just have a fear of pressure cookers. Instilled in me as a child. My mom was terrified of them too, and told me all kinds of horror stories. I probably should do some work on that.:hmm::giggle:

Talk to your psychiatrist. This can be overcome. It's a long and difficult journey, but in the end it is worth it. :giggle:

When not using a pressure cooker begins to cause undue distress in my life, I will definately seek help for it.
