Adding captioning to movies in Netflix for the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone is going to be a big deal for a lot of people, and Netflix has added that feature today. It's already present when you watch Netflix movies with a browser on a desktop or laptop, but now mobile users can take advantage of captions as well.

Unfortunately, not all films have this feature. If there is captioning, a little voice balloon icon will appear on the volume control. Tap it and select English, which is the only option for now. I tried it in several movies, and about half the ones I sampled have the feature. The captions are in yellow text and are easy to read. Captions are going to be really great for the hearing impaired, or even nice for watching a movie in a crowded environment.

As of this writing, the version listed in the iTunes store is 1.2.1 but the version that was delivered to my iPhone was 1.3. I think the iTunes store information is running behind, but make sure you have the latest version which contains the captioning feature.

The issue with streaming Netlflix was that they didn't stream captions to your TV. Probably more people watch movies on TV than on an iPod, iPad, or phone. I get my Netflix the old-fashioned way, on discs through the mail.

I would get streaming Netflix for the TV if they would stream the captions on everything that comes captioned on discs, but they don't.

So I guess it's cool that they do it for mobile devices now, but until they do it for TVs, I'm not interested.

If you use Plixie to look up which Netflix movie have captions then you can use streaming movie on your TV. Here's the link:

phlixie.

I know I can look up which movies are SUPPOSED to have captions, but the issue was that if you streamed them (vs. getting them on a disc) they often (or even usually) did not. The HDMI cables don't support the captioning is part of the issue, as I understand it.

Don't know what you mean...

Otherwise, I'm excite to have closed caption on Netflix to go.
I am going to be the grammar nazi for now. 'Excite' is incorrectly spelt
it is 'Excited'

I believe that CineXplayer on iPhone is better than Netflix. Netflix subtitle's fonts are too small. CineXPlayer s fonts are adjusting from small to large. JClarke, you know about it.

Then you would want to use Wii or PS3 with Netflix app that only available to show subtitle to television. You also can use PC or Mac hook up to HDTV with adapter plug-in.

Incorrect, Netflix doesn't provide CLOSED CAPTION but the subtitle which already "printed" as image, same concept as you turn subtitle from DVD player that still go thru.

Cheapskate that I am, I really don't want to buy yet another piece of equipment. I'll stick with Netflix through the mail for the foreseeable future.

@Beachgirl --

Since Internet Streaming comes from the Internet, the only way to get Netflix Streaming Movies on a TV is to Either get a device (Disc player, gaming system, or other) that hooks up to both your TV and the Internet, or get an Internet-Ready TV. The only Internet-Ready TV on the market that allows the display of Netflix Movies with Subtitles/CC is the Sony HDTV with GoogleTV already inside.

As for the list of movies, Netflix & Phlixie offer pages showing which STREAMING titles have subtitles added to them. These Subtitles will show if you have 1 of the devices listed.

Thanks. We have been thinking about getting an internet-ready tv. Good to know that the Sony version is the only one that would get the streaming Netflix with CCs.
