Signing With Deaf Friends Via iPhone's FaceTime Feature...

This summer my current cell phone contract will end. I want to get Apple's iPhone because it has the FaceTime feature. Have you used this FaceTime technology (on the iPhone) to communicate with sign with other deaf and HOH folks? I want to get the phone just for that one feature. Does it deliver?

It works well. The only annoying thing is you need a stand of some sort for your phone if you want to actually sign using both hands. The few times I've used FaceTime I've held the phone in one hand and signed with the other.



I think I'd prefer an iPad 2 for FaceTime purposes though, the bigger screen would be nice to have for video chats. But the iPhone does do a nice job. Of course that's just my opinion :)

Oh, and FaceTime will only work on wifi, not 3G. Unless you jailbreak, but that's a whole other story.

What if you are sitting in front of a desk and you have the phone upright against a stack of books? You can use both hand that way right?
 
If you download Skype on iPhone, you don't need wifi for it and you can video chat on it.

I have also heard good things about Fring, which also allows for video chat over 3G.

I can't add any personal comments though, since I'm still on an iPhone 3GS.

I have tried Fring on Windows Mobile and it was awful, lagging and slow. Skype was much better.
 
Why purchase the iPhone for just that one feature? I believe there is a MyTouch phone from sprint that is similar and I believe some Android phones will have this video chat feature. Look into it, you might find something you might like better.
 
get iPod Touch to save your trouble if you cannot afford $50+/month under at&t or Verzion
 
Under AT&T or Verizon the lowest bill he would have would be around $85.
 
Not unless he's on a family plan or something. I only pay 45 dollars a month on AT&T for my data plan, and the others on my plan can take advantage of my minutes.

Apple is working on a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone. That s called iPhone Nano. They may sell an iPhone for under $200 without a contract. I don't know when will they be released.

I wasn't even talking about Sprint. Sprint doesn't have the iPhone and will likely never have the iPhone unless some unexpected under the table deal is made with Apple.

AquaBlue is hearing and likely will be using voice as well as text and data. If he uses a lower tiered data plan (which is required for iPhone with both companies) his cheapest will be around $85.

However if he is already with either of these companies and has an unlimited text and data plan he may be grandfathered in for that for his next 2 year contract.

I've not heard of this. I am sure it will have less memory (8GB maybe?) and likely not do everything the full iPhone will.

Yeah, I read somewhere that it'd be a streaming-only phone. E.g. no downloading apps, all your photos, music, etc...will be in the "cloud" - seems like Apple might want to really push for you to signup with a MobileMe account if an iPhone nano actually comes to fruition. (The paranoiac in me questions what happens when the internet/the "cloud" crashes/goes down? you lose access to all your files... which would suck)

I'd rather get an iPod touch in that case, then, because then I could actually download apps like Skype and Fring. Don't know if the streaming-only thing will actually happen, though. I haven't been able to find more concrete details about this alleged iPhone nano. Interesting concept!

I've never used 'cloud' storage per se other than having a photobucket account which is the same basic idea as MobileMe. I think MobileMe requires an annual fee, yes?

I would prefer a full iPhone though so if Internet goes down or whatever, I still have access to some things.
