I got a letter from 'PAWS WITH A CAUSE' saying I will be getting a Needs Assessment visit in 18-24 months of receipt of my letter! The letter just came today! I will have to wait this long to see if I am eligible to get a hearing dog , and then money has to raise to train a dog before the training can start! This could take over two years to get another hearing dog! I was told it would take a year when I called ! Has anyone gotten a hearing dog from 'PAWS WITH A CAUSE 'or do know of anyone that did and how long did you have to wait? I was not sure if I should post this with our pets or here?

 I am somewhat familiar with Paws With a Cause and have in the past known one or two puppy raisers with them. I don't know about the average length of waiting time for a dog with PWC but I do know that often wait times for service dogs are long ,because there generally is a waiting list, and it takes almost or at least a year of basic training with puppies which includes additional prep for service work, and then the actual official service dog training begins at the facility once they are returned to the program at about 12 months. Sometimes there is a dog that goes part way through and then it is determined that this dog would actually NOT be a good candidate based on some temperament or personality trait that comes out as they mature. There is a very long waiting list for adoptive homes for partially trained service dogs that have not been able to make the strenuous requirements to be formally placed.
Then there's additional training with recipient that is specific to that handler and that environment. This was my last understanding.
Do you know who it was you discussed with who said it would take a year? Maybe you could mention that to someone there....but I honestly wouldn't expect to be able to get a service/signal alert dog in a year's time because there's just so much that goes into it. But it would be great if you could.

I hadn't heard of Paws with a cause, but I do know that hubby would be happier if I had a hearing dog, but we do not qualify as there are too many people in the house. Also, MIL will not allow it. Maybe down the road after we move and my mother has passed on and my son moves out. then it will be myself, my daughter and my hubby.

I do not recall who I spoke to on the phone, I forgot to write down her name!
I try to do this when I made phone calls, I am getting forgetful! It took a year to get Finlay from NEADS ,I would have come up with $5,500 or more
to get another dog from NEADS . I was looking on line for dogs in shelters
and there so many dumb rules to get a dog! I saw a poodle and the shelter wanted the dog to go to a home that had another dog to keep it company!
WTF! People are giving their pets away as they can't afford them and a shelter want you have a 'playmate ' for a dog! This is not fair for the dog , it will have to stay in the shelter longer! It was a black poodle like my beloved Finlay! I did call NEADS today and have to wait for call back. I might try to get a shetler dog and have a trainer help me train it to be a hearing dog.

I am almost deaf, I am lucky I got Lady, she was tied out behind a burnt house pregnet and someone took her in till the puppies were born .She has had a hard life. but got her she was 1 yr old . she is great. follows me everywhere i go. alerts me to sounds. does all commands . I have taught her well. I jsut want to say dont put some dogs aside . check other kennels and run ad and see is you can get a dog to help you. Labs are smart learn fast and love people and aim to please.. go get a grown dog and see if it ajust to you.. good luck,,

Posting here because this topic has come up to the top again -whatdidyousay got herself a poodle from a shelter (yay!) but I wanted to say, I have supported "Paws With a Cause" for more than 20 years now. They are a wonderful group. I have never formally trained a service dog myself, and am in awe of all the work that goes into it.

Whatdidyousay, I hope you are happy with your Marty, of course, but if you or anyone else should ever go back again to PWAC, I'd love to hear about the experience.

I love my little doggie! He is not feeling good right now right now! He is constipated and I had to call the vet to see how to help him! The poor dog has gone through a lot in the last few weeks! It is too bad there are not more no kill shelters around, 3,000 miles it a long way for a little dog to travel!

3,000 miles!! How did you happen to adopt him from so far away? I thought he was local to you.

Marty came from a Kill shelter in California he was send to Massachusetts which is my state . He was on death row ! :(
Cal. is horrible about killing dogs! My sister dog was pick by the AOC in Berkeley Ca. My sister called and said she would get the her dog the next day and when she got there her dog was already killed! The pound said they would hold the dog for 10 days before killing it!

Oh, that's awful!

The ACO in Ca. are horrible! They should be called cold blooded killers instead! My dog was laying down sleeping on the steps of a friend house in Berkeley Ca. my friend was right next to my dog and an ACO drove by and took my dog ! My friend told the guy I just moved here and did not have car to get my dog from the pound! The ass did not give a shit! My Dog was not on city property , she was on my friend's property! I was lucky to get my dog back! Marty is very lucky to be alive! I brought Marty to the vet today and he took a poop ! YA! We when for our first walk today at the park and Marty did a real good job walking with me ! He did not pull me and stayed on my left side when I let know that where I wanted him to walk. Some little white dog was barking at Marty and he just looked at the dog! I think he had to been someone pet and something awful went wrong.

Sounds like it. If he knows to walk on the left he may have had some obedience training. Also being able to ignore another dog is a good sign.

Have you tried the common commands with him, like sit, stay, wait? See if he will sit if you do a hand motion of moving your hand up from about waist level to chest level. If he knows that sign he has definitely had obedience training.

The whole command is "come" -with arm outstretched and making a scooping motion toward you at about waist level - and then "sit" which is bringing your hand up to about mid-chest.

Another command taught for "come" is to cross your right hand to your left shoulder and tap or make a fist with your hand just below the shoulder.

If he responds to any of those signs, then sure thing he has had formal training.

I did do the stay and wait command and Marty knew what to do. He is rusty
with staying on the left side but he did better on his walk than some other dogs! I will try the commands you posted when he feel better. I really think he was someone pet, when I used the vacuum cleaner today , I vacuumed the rug right next to him and he did nothing he only pick up his head looked at me. Some dogs will run away or bark at the vacuum cleaner, Finlay hated the vacuum cleaner and tried to attack it! I was really impressed how he did not bark back at the dog today! I told him he was good boy!

A white poodle who knows sign and has no fear of the vacuum. Maybe Marty is deaf?

Marty can hear me call his name and he woke up when he heard something,
I was glad to see him do that, it mean he will response to the phone etc . I had to bring Marty to the Er vet today and some think he may be part Maltese

Bottesini, you were kidding with that comment, right? Those signs are just the standard signs used in obedience training. A dog with basic obedience should know most of them; any dog with the next level up of obedience would also know "place" and "about" to get in place at the owner's left side.

No. I rescue deaf dogs. The lack of fear of the vacuum is often a sign the dog is deaf.

Those signs I expect hearing people to use with their dogs. My daughter and her husband do.

My deaf dog responds to ASL. Actually so do my two hearing dogs, but that is unimportant.

Who trained him would be why he responds to hearing people signs.

But it is a moot point since she already said she is certain Marty is hearing.
