AT&T buys T-Mobile

Tmobile and AT&T have different band for 3G networks. 1700 vs 1900/850 MHz. That is why you cant use a 3G Tmobile phone on a AT&T network and it will not work.
So, suppose you have a 3G T-Mobile phone. Then, AT&T network takes over. What happens to the 3G phone?

T-mobile phone will still support 3G as always.

The newer att phone in future will support t-mobile 3G/4G frequencies, in combined with att frequencies.

T-Mobile and AT&T use the same frequencies for GSM-EDGE (2G), but they have different frequencies for 3G (GSM-HSPA/UMTS). T-Mobile can't get iPhone 5 this year and AT&T-Mo may get iPhone 6 for LTE next year.

How you know? Do you have source to support your claim?

iPhone 5 is just rumor, not confirm by Apple yet.

Good question. It wont happen overnight, though. I believe there will be new phones that work on both tmobile and at&t 3g networks, Im guessing. I think their main goal is more coverage with 3g and 4g.

A fast new network for Apple's iPhone

Deutsche Telekom was an early (and originally an exclusive) iPhone partner for Apple in Europe, but it could not bring the popular smartphone to America for T-Mobile due to radio frequency differences in the firm's US network. T-Mobile's non-standard 3G radio spectrum allocations were granted due to the scarcity of available spectrum.

By selling T-Mobile to AT&T, Deutsche Telekom retains a foothold in the US market while AT&T will greatly bolster its ability to provide improved coverage now. It also accelerates its ability to roll out "4G" HSPA+ technology that Apple's iPhone 5 is expected to support this summer, thanks to new Qualcomm MDM6600 baseband chip already in use in the Verizon iPhone 4 model, which latently supports HSPA+ and will expose functional support in the new AT&T model this summer.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile have already begun building out HSPA+, the latest generation of GSM/3GPP mobile networking supporting data speeds of up to 21Mbps (as some European carriers have been operating for years). Existing AT&T iPhone 4 models support 7Mbps data downloads, and HSPA+ networks can be backwardly compatible with them; new iPhone 5 models are expected to be able to take full advantage of the fast new network.

AppleInsider | T-Mobile gets the iPhone, Apple gets fast new HSPA+ network

But T-mobile won't get iPhone. T-Mobile is an independent company and will offer phones like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and the Sidekick 4G, not the iPhone.

Since I had the similar poor experience with T-mobile when I was in U.S
So long, suckers! (To T-mobile - no offense)

I found out about att will plan to upgrade all tmobile customers to 850/1900 MHz to use 2G and 3G, along with att customers so 1700 MHz AWS will be used for 4G only so att will shut tmobile 3G off in 2 years after merger finishes.

Yea, Sidekick G4 Plan would go up prices. I cannot afford, I decide to get Virgin Mobile it's cheaper plans after May 31 would close my account on Tmo.

Att made big announcement that bought T-mobile USA, that is really surprise me and blew me out big time... I really really have never thought ATT would buy T-mobile in my lifetime since born.

anyway...

Really? You got kidding me? I dont think T-Mobile phone become uesless. Unless You could be prove me wrong. But read this-
....AT&T's planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA, it's now clear that the company is interested in augmenting its 700MHz LTE spectrum with T-Mobile's 1700MHz AWS airwaves -- a move that it says would help it deploy LTE to 95 percent of the American population. AWS is currently used by T-Mobile for its 3G services, but running LTE there isn't without precedent -- that's where MetroPCS is already set up, so there's some potential for consumer hardware and infrastructure synergy there....

Quad-Band 4G is future proofed for AT&T.
Plus AT&T Ceo said, there will release new phone with Dual Bands.

T-Mobile can't get iPhone 5 this year and AT&T-Mo may get iPhone 6 for LTE next year.
Honestly i don't know What are you talking about?

Oh, no! Me and my BB just recovered from the T-Mobile buy out of Suncom. Now I'll have to switch again. :(
Sweetie, Big Hi! Please dont be panic about Att acquired T-mo USA. You will be fine, but I encourage you read articles over blog sites until you feel more confidnce or doubt. its up to your desicion.T-Mobile is not over yet. but just relax, please.. :P

I hope they keep their word.

I guess that's something good. :)
Reba, Dont get high expectation. I dont know if ATT kept their words.. let wait and see the outcome of ATT after 6 month and 12 months.

Hey Please remember that T-mobile is trademark from Deutsche-telekom, Germany. So, T-mobile will reband the offical AT&T in few months later.

BTW- i see the picture in avatar thats you?

I'm not kidding and I'm just try to explain about what article saying.

att saying about 3G in tmobile phone will render as useless after they shut tmobile 3G off and replace with LTE, it will happen in around 2 years after merge completed or could take little longer than that. att hasn't set date about tmobile 3G shutoff yet. Your phone will continue to render 2G only after tmobile 3G shutoff and I think your contract may expire soon before 3G shutoff occur or you may get upgrade with big discount. I think it is possible for att to launch LTE on AWS, along with tmobile 3G for now.

Reba, you are safe and your BB will works fine under att signal due to no 3G support.

I'm not panicking (yet); I'm just checking things out. :)

If the takeover succeeds, it won't be complete for about one year. So, I'll wait and see what happens.

My BB was a special made for Suncom, so I'm curious what will happen to it.

Yes, that's me but it's many moons ago. :giggle:
