Not yet! I am really concerned. Have you ever experience if you have older fur kids and then adopt the new fur kid? did the older fur kid decide to finish the life... I hate to say "die". did it happen to you guys before? I am so paranoid that if we plan to adopt a puppy then one of my cat that i would think will decide to finish his life?
My three cats' healthy seems good to me so far.

My hubby said that I am being overly paranoid. I am aware that is who I am. :aw:

I really do not want to adopt a puppy but they want to.

I doubt a cat can even kill a puppy. However, I can tell you that I shared your fear once. I have a 4 year old cat, Barnaby, and I got another kitten who was 8 months old at the time. Initially I was terrified that Barnaby (who was/(still is!) twice bigger than the kitten) would kill the kitten, so I did a trial period first. Madison (the kitten) initially was TERRIFIED of Barnaby and would attack him every time he came closer, but Barnaby had patience and backed away. After 8 hours of tension and attacking each other, they became best friends forever.

Oh I think my post wasn't clear. when the elder fur kid see the other young fur kid to come in the house then the elder fur kid will die within a few days. It is like the elder fur kid surrender his power and pass it to the young fur kid to take over the master of the house.

i have three cats, and i believe that two of them will get over with the new puppy. But i have one oldest cat who is seriously neurotic. He dislike being near my kids, and strangers or friends at all. He only accepted me and my hub. He likes to be with me when it's a very quiet moment. He usually hid in the closet all day when we are around at home. I am concerned about one cat especially. :D

I see what you're saying. There's always an adjustment period with new furkids coming in. I think if you give your eldest (and neurotic!) cat lots more attention, it should be okay. If you gave all your attention to the new puppy and ignored the cat, I can see how he'd not like that. My mom told me the key to bringing in new furkids is making sure the existing ones get just as much attention, or even more, at first so they don't feel they are being "replaced".

OHHH!!! When you said finish his life, I thought you meant the cat finish the puppy's life. I was just like "Is your cat THAT strong?!"

I see what you mean. I do have a cat in Miami (from when I was living with my mom during HS). I want to bring her here in Alabama with me but she is so old and I was worried that the stress of flying would kill her since she has only 1 lung left.

I do have a recommendation. You can always give the older cat a peaceful space/area that the puppy will never go to. Like a room or something and never let the puppy go there.

You beat me to it. I was going to add that as well. FF said the cat likes to hide in the closet. Make a nice "home" in there, blankets, cat bed, whatever he likes so he really feels happy in there.

Yeah I will make sure to give plenty of attentions, and give the neutoric kitty a cozy place in the closet.

Biggest problem is that I don't close the doors in the house. :hmm: but i know puppy have to meet all of them and will get bored with them and will leave them alone. like i said, i am being overly paranoid. :o

It probably won't kill your old cat from sadness, and old pets are often revived and get new interest in life from a baby animal.

It might make the cat live longer.

I agree. The pup will inevitably harass the kitties for awhile but with patient and gentle training (Along with a few lessons from the kitties themselves) I think it could turn out to be a good thing.

my hub and I grew up with dogs and never had a cage. Always leave in the kitchen. I dont think we ever want a cage. :hmm: we will learn more about a dog when we get a dog.

Can you bring something that smell like the puppy home so your cats can use the puppy smell before the puppy does move in. ? I heard of people doing this when are bringing home a new baby and they have older fur kids. I had dog and friend found a kitten on the road that needed a home. My dog was around 3 year old and she welcome the kitten right into our family. My dog would let the kitten dry nurse
on her , they became real good buddies!
