Judge Acknowledges Struggle With Alcoholism

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- A Maryland judge who was convicted of drunken driving is taking daily blood-alcohol tests before and during his courtroom work.

Washington County Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone III said Tuesday he agreed to the unusual punishment.

"I'm glad it's gotten to this point," said Boone, 68, who has acknowledged a long struggle with alcoholism. "The sanctions are certainly totally appropriate and I'm prepared to live by them."

Boone also must attend at least five Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week.

Judges elsewhere in the country have been ordered to attend AA and in some cases have been required to take random drug and alcohol tests, according to Cynthia Gray, director of the American Judicature Society's Center for Judicial Ethics.

Boone pleaded guilty in March to driving under the influence in a collision that caused minor injuries to a 25-year-old woman driving another vehicle. Boone blew a blood-alcohol level of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

He was fined $1,000 and sentenced to three years of unsupervised probation.

The breath tests were ordered by the Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities.

Boone said he bought his own blood-alcohol testing machine. A law enforcement officer or court bailiff has administered the tests in his office twice daily - in the mornings and after lunch - since the reprimand took effect Jan. 17.

"They watch me blow into the thing and verify what the readings are and we put it on the log," he said.

The commission said the reprimand was a warning.

It was at least the second time the gruff and outspoken jurist has been in trouble since he was appointed to the bench in 1997. Boone was reprimanded in 2008 for calling three black women lawyers "the Supremes" and advising their defendant to get "an experienced male attorney."

In that case, Boone acknowledged his comments suggested racial and sexual bias. He said he was trying to protect the three public defenders from representing a defendant he knew was difficult.

Boone said he has no plans to step down before his mandatory retirement at age 70.

I think that's pretty cool. It shows nobody is perfect.

Its also cool he's sharing his experience for others to learn from.

What about this??:

The "Supremes" are a singing trio....and are black. I'm sure they (the 3 black women lawyers) didn't appreciate the remark from that Judge!

And the fact, how long has he been sitting on that high throne, drunk? Were the cases he handled judged "fairly"? Was he "easy" on drunken drivers, since he was drunk himself?

If we went to work drunk...if teachers went to work drunk...we would be FIRED! Surely not a blood test before entering the classroom or going to work.

That's America to you, and I have a strong disdain for how America treats their offenders.

You see - rehabilitation is the key. What he does on his personal time is up to him. He got a DUI, thats okay. Thats him on his own time, not on the clock.

Do you have any shred of proof that he drank on the job? Or are you inserting that?

Just a matter of time before somebody screams for the death penalty.

That not alright for judge get in jail due DUI because of Injuried woman and he can resigned jobs from bench and he would no longer in bench if he in jail for lifes.

Many million judges always careful in swore when got jobs and never lied expect drugs, drunks and lots mores but judges must stay out trouble if must get rehab after jail or still no matter!!

The Judge is an alcoholic, right?...So when he wakes up in the AM....shaking and with the "DT's"...(detox trauma)....the only way alcoholics can stop that is by drinking more alcohol....I've seen an alcoholic before, with the "dt's" (the shakes in the AM) and they grab a beer or 2...even 3...before it stops so they can go to work.

So, it's my bet he drank alchol before court. Or he's gonna have the shakes so bad he can't even hold up a piece of paper. And of course, he's gonna drink alcohol thru the day.

Would I want an alcoholic judge to try my case? NO...unless it was alcohol related.

Would you want an alcoholic or a drug addict to teach your children? He was on the bench, as an "active" alcoholic, not a recovered. That's my point.

Making assumptions, are we?

I don't see how....he acknowledged that he has had a long struggle with alcoholism....I can see taking a drink here and there, but not a judge who judges people...(on the job). And the DUI that he got..and injuring another driver....

Seems to be he "got off" very easy, compared to regular citizens that are locked up, lose their jobs and licenses and are fined, big time!

That's an assumption.

There are a lot of degrees of alcoholism. Some do not have DTs, but they are still dependent on alcohol and can't stop once they start.

I've lately been seeing posts concerning "recovered" alcoholics. There is no such thing as a recovered alcoholic. Recovering, yes.

Yeah, ur right Gleen. I used to work with an alcoholic. She carried several small bottles of booze in her purse, and downed them several times a day while working. Whenever we went to lunch, she downed 2 more.....I never saw her with the DT's....and she was a graphic artist and we used Xacto knives....But of course, I never saw her whenever she woke up in the AM before getting ready for work. Eventually, she was fired.

:laugh2: :laugh2: I remember that one!....So he got 4 years in jail?....WOW!...Served the sick judge right!

I remember one time...that a judge said..."I don't care if you are deaf, if you do this again I'll throw you in jail!"....

LMAO! Yeah amazing how his name probably will be remember for thousands of years because of something stupid and embarrassing
