Does AD need an Audism policy?

Would have been interesting to have a poll on this idea. I don't like censorship, but I have seen the ugliness. Same with religious threads. It would also be nice to discuss religions, but it gets real ugly.

I feel the same way. I'm uneasy about censorship, too. However, even the 1st amendment comes with it responsiblity. For instance, you can't yell fire in a crowd. Disrespect for a group of people also shouldn't be condoned here any longer.

This is sorta the poll right?

Someone saying that deaf people dont have many opportunities as those who have CIs shouldnt be spewing that stuff here on AD. If you want to spew that stuff, then accept the responsibility of getting tarred and feathered.

Exactly, and if it is continuously the same thing, that's grounds for expulsion based on trolling.

We don't need a new policy; we just need the mods to do their jobs weeding out the trolls.

Well, the votes are kind of mixed into the comments. On this topic, I would decline to vote. No plans to favor censorship, nor do I plan to favor audist tendencies.

:hmm:

I say yes. But, I also think banning a certain few would also solve a lot of issues. I feel that if a person's sole purpose for being here is to degrade and disrespect this community, they should be banned.

There are subjects that are very controversial and things can get heated. That's understandable, but, there's a huge difference between that and someone coming here with an agenda to spread hate and acrimony.

.....

And, please mods, do something about the blatant disrespect that is becoming SO rampant here.

Agreed.

One of the reasons I lost interest in posting here is the rampant arrogance of certain members. While we have some audists here, I see more disrespect from non-audists, which makes this site very unappealing.

Oh, and to answer PFH's original question....in other words, you want this site to be only open to people that were born deaf and remain deaf? HOH, oral, hearing, and CI implantees do not qualify?

Wirelessly posted

the problem is that there is no consensus on the "deaf issues". There are oral deaf people who advocate for the very things that other deaf people label as audist.

Huh? PFH is talking about people who exhibit audist views not people who have CIs, HOH or who are deaf.

Unless you consider all people who you just identified have audist views?

I am just wondering what are some examples of offensive audist views that you guys are talking about?

Agreed.

I was addressing the audists. There's only a few, but they are very vocal and disrespectful to this community. There's one in particular who's rabidly disrespectful.

I am still learning about the term audist, i have always used the term ignorant when explaining to my daughter why some people did or said certain things. Yes the things people do and say here on this site and out in the real world can trigger many different emotions. But like I tell my daughter, ignoring them doesn't do anybody any good it is better to try to educate them. If you fail thats ok some people will NEVER get it, but its better to try because you will find that for some people it's not so much that they are mean they are just uneducated and didn't know.

So with that said I vote there should be at least 3 strikes minimum if not more before they are banned because how else will they learn if they are not given a chance.

To be frank - I am getting tired of the negative audist POV's being spewed here on the forum.

I sincerely think this forum should be a "safe haven" for the deaf community no matter who you are. We already experience enough issues in our daily lives as it is. I really don't want that kind of crap here on All Deaf.

How about you guys? What do you think?

Agreed.

I would like to refer you to my first post in this thread, and inform you to read it a bit more educationally.

Dang, I must be an audist.

Iam inclided to agree but the problem is whenever we ridicule, tar and fether those who posess audist views, we get banned. Look at Jillio, for one. I have so many ugly thoughts that I want to say to them but I find myself holding them back to avoid getting banned. I shouldn't care whether I get banned or not but I guess I do,,hehehe.

People who spot audist views would get banned if a policy was put in effect.

I'm in much the same postion and I can think of quite a few ugly things to say to certain audists on this board. Like you, I care too much about getting banned. FJ is on ignore and one other audist is dangerouly close to being put on ignore by me as well.

Being LD, I came here to AD knowing very little about the Deaf community. There are very few Deaf people in my small town. I read, learned, was chastized, was taught and mentored. Rather than arguing it was my way to question, to think and to learn.

This has not been the case with some others. No matter how many times they read the same responses, see the same answers, are corrected or chastised, they continue to push their own agendas and argue (often vehemently and offensively) without a hint of learning a different viewpoint.

I have learned a lot from them. I have truely learned what an audist is. I have learned what true prejudice is.

I rather agree with the three strikes rule idea as well as the weeding idea.
I think in my earlier days I would have gotten a strike or two myself but I was trying to learn and understand. I would question or give a wrong idea from ignorance, not for the sole sake of arguing.

I know of one such person who claimed to be here for the sole purpose of correcting our misconceptions. I have really tired of the constant bickering that this person has caused.

:gpost: +2. LD'ened here also. It's distressing to see some posters insulting others and the "name-callings" I've seen on a lot of threads. And in some instances, being "ganged upon" to shove their opinion down ur throat as if ur opinion means squat...Reba is one member that I truly respect and is so nice whenever she points things out and makes a better understanding, without all the name-calling....

I am D/HH and I came here seeking out someone who understood my situation and I learned there was a whole community of people across America that understood my feelings and frustrations. I've learned how to better deal with and cope with these frustrations. I've made a lot of wonderful friends and met a lot of good people along the way. I'm glad that I can come here to vent my frustrations without feeling like I'm alienating people with my deafness.

I was raised to feel ashamed of being deaf but now I realize that there is nothing to be ashamed of. I have learned that a lot of what I went through as a D/HH child growing up completely mainstreamed without ASL was due to the one-sided audist views that my parents were fed. The audi's I had pushed for complete mainstreaming and so forth. I struggled in school, I really did and when I brought home poor grades, instead of my parents helping me to understand I was told I was just being lazy and that I needed to listen. Looking back I think to myself "How could I listen when I couldn't even hear in the first place?" I was told I was day dreaming a lot in school. I believe this is what the receiving end of audism feels like. You are made to feel bad about yourself because of your hearing status, ashamed really. Audists want to make you feel inferior due to your hearing status. To me this is the same as discriminating against someone with a visible disability. No one would dare cut down a person that is paralyzed and is confined to a wheelchair. But why do people want to make fun of the deaf and hard of hearing? It just makes me feel like I'm missing something and that it's my fault for missing that something.

I think this is the first time I will use this emoticon... :grouphug:
