My husband is going deaf

Hello all - Just found this site by accident - I was googling whether deaf people could drive, and the link was from here. I can't believe I found this. Anyway, my 49 y.o. husband has Meniere's Disease. He has lost the hearing in one ear, and when he went to the ENT a few days ago, the dr. said before he knew it, my husband would have a hearing aide in the good ear. I believe the hearing aide is just to buy time until the hearing in that ear goes. My husband feels it could be a long time before he loses the hearing in his ear ("what does the dr. know anyway?") but we have to be prepared that it could happen quickly. I hope to learn what would be helpful to prepare for this. So that's our story. :)

2. Deaf folks do drive (Some think this is an insulting question btw)
3. If you are dizzy from Menieres, maybe wait to drive. (Common sense)
4. Check out the late deaf forum here for some good topics on late deafness. A few Menieres folks are on All Deaf and may help you learn.

Referring to question #2, baptism by fire is a good way to learn.


Some of us don't drive. But that's usually because we are blind too. :lol:

Thank you LDNanna - I hope I didn't insult with the driving issue! I'm really not sure what to expect, and I want to start finding out everything in advance. I'll check out the late deaf forum. (I can tell I will probably step on a lot of toes as I find my way around... yikes)
 
Okay, I give up. Where is the late deaf forum again? I'm searching for it but can't seem to find it?

edit: Oops, never mind. I think I found it.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I drive the car everywhere. I hope you and your husband can learn a lot about deafness, Deaf Culture and our deaf experiences. ASL (American Sign Language) is very important to many us, Deafies and some HOHs (Hard Of Hearings).

Just browse around all through the threads here and post with a discussion or debate. See you around here. :wave:

Am in my 30's new hoh. My husband is oral deaf from birth due to Rubella syndrome. He is very techie/handy mechanically and likes driving/cars.
I think this is a great site and I also recommend the late deafened thread like Bott mentioned.
