The Talking Deafie

I'm relatively late deafened and I talk so much people probably wish I would shut up! :giggle:

:hmm: I am born deaf. Pretty much have shut up. I don't think anyone cares. I am certain people who know you are glad if you can talk to them. :)

c'mon. don't be shy! confess to me!

Yep..I am ..speak perfectly, no deaf accent and read lips really well so ..most ppl can't tell i am deaf....i can't hear my own voice tho and sometimes i am a bit loud..laughing..

Talkie Deafie? Yep, that's me. I'm sorry I ever learned to talk, though.

wow that is amazing to me..that you wished you had never learned to talk,
I say that because, I find I am not fully accepted in the deaf community because i do speak well...I have even been accused of faking my deafness
yeah like i stuck pencils in my ears...geez....

Clarification - what I'm asking is if there is any deafie in here who can VERBALLY communicate with hearing people fluently. That doesn't mean you have a very good understanding of English grammar. If you can FLUENTLY TALK but you are not easily understood by them (like me), that's ok.. you still count :) If you are late-deaf, you still count.

What doesn't count is - You speak only few words when communicating with hearies.

You get what I'm saying?

OK I got ya...i am definately one...no one has a problem understanding me..

This breaks my heart. I'm sure you have people in your life who want to "hear" what you have to say.

One to one with her daughter or any member of her family to talk oral or sign. If she sign with deaf members of the Deaf community in her area, then she will have something to say a lot, I think. :hmm:

And when I do talk to the deaf community , people are very nice to me. But even if you may not know it from the way I behave here, I am very shy.

Plus I am not a great signer, so I always feel like I am their favorite child. And that is a little embarrassing at my age.

And you know I am usually very tough and happy. I don't know what made me say that above.

Count me in, I am what you say oral deaf. Used to have a speech impediment, now some just say I speak with a English accent. The public says "you speak so well, you can't be deaf". Yeah right!

Wow! I thought I was the only one who talked with an accent. Everyone who meets me thinks I'm British. :cool2:

How odd. I thought I replied to this topic.

I also have been told that I sound British. Nobody who has heard me talk thinks I sound Deaf. Just that I have an accent.

Hearing people have told me many times that voices over the phone are somewhat distorted. They said there is an obvious difference when a voice is done in the flesh and when it is done through electronics (phone, TV, speaker, etc.)

I wonder if the CI makes this difference even bigger? Or perhaps CI therapy and mapping is always done in real life and they rarely take the phone into account?

The topic of the thread...

First to get out of the way, I'm oral deaf through and through. First, I had a HA since 3 and a CI since 47. With my HA, I had a slight deaf voice that most didn't really notice and I was a little bit nasel. Now with a CI, I lost all traces of the deaf voice and speak much more naturally. I will say that a CI really allows one to hear oneself really well. Makes a big difference with one's speech.

Back to the reply about phones...

Yea while I can use the phone with the best of them (hearing), the phone does distort a little. I have no trouble understanding the person but I'm not sure whom I speaking to at times. If depends if it somebody I don't speak with on the phone much versus somebody who I know well.

I am a talking deafie. I was completely mainstreamed without sign language. I am profound deaf in left ear, hh in right ear.

If we do coffee, I will make the effort to talk .

And I will make the effort to learn some signs. I already know a few but I am far from fluent!

Don't worry about it . I am far from a great signer. Kind of ASL mixed with home sign. :P

Saw this just now. Count me in. I had to learn to speak because of the oral school I went to. Prefer ASL over speaking anyday.

The last guy I talk to (about awnings) is very easy to understand and we discussed real good - without any writing. I am sure I have an accent as sometimes some people don't understand me.

That will work. Hopefully we will be able to do coffee someday as I am already looking forward to it. You will also get to meet my DD as well. I don't plan on leaving her here!

The party could grow! I could invite granddaughters so she could have someone to talk to.

Cool. Might as well get some reservations at a restaurant then, lol. Wonder if they will book years in advance? ;)

Just wait until you are ready. I think you can pretty much walk in anywhere around here and get seated.
