[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiNAZRucXfs]YouTube - Raw Video - MCSO Detention Officer Caught Assaulting Inmate[/ame]

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has release this short video clip showing an inmate being transferred to the psychiatric unit. On the video, a man deputies identified as the 31-year-old Gerster walked onto a table and put his foot down on the inmate's neck, holding him down.

Investigators from the sheriff's office also linked Gerster to another case in which he watched over an inmate who was restrained in a bed. Gerster struck the inmate several times with a closed fist.

Gerster is charged in two assaults, and is also accused of accessing a sheriff's office computer to get an inmate's address and providing it to a friend, who then assaulted the inmate, according to deputies.

Gerster was already under investigation before the most recent assault happened, but was never removed from duty, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators said it was the assault involving both the officers that brought the sheriff's office investigations together. Superiors said they learned of the problem after other officers came forward to report the assault.

How much more do we have to hear about this before the law comes down on Maricopa County PD? It's just a matter of time till Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his police departments be arrested for dozens of charges ranging from aggravated assaults to civil rights violations to etc.

In that video I saw another deputy restrain the one that got out of line.

Do you work in Law Enforcement?

Yup he's gonna be the next inmate in that jail. Those that remember him as an abusive officer will have their way with him.

(note: Sheriff's department and police department are separate entities.)

You can't condemn entire departments for the actions of the bad apples as long as the department heads continue to clean up their departments by investigating allegations and getting rid of the guilty ones.

Is there any agency or organization that doesn't have bad apples?

What makes the difference is how those bad apples are handled.

I don't think they put convicted police, deputies, or guards in the same facilities in which they worked. If they did, they would have to be segregated from the general population.

This is where I wish karma would come into play, but our judiciary won't allow it citing 'safety reasons' even though this dude had a complete disregard for the safety of the inmates under his watch by blatantly abusing them.

However inmates can be transferred to other facilities and even commit further crimes upon release and sent to other facilities. These are the inmates that will remember him as a guard and will sic the other inmates on him as quickly as possible to serve some 'jailhouse justice'.

Changed your mind yet, Jiro?

I hope that the deputy that restrained him reported on him. But I doubt those that worked around him did. Nobody likes getting involved in this kind of dispute. They may bitch about the bad apples, but it doesn't mean they'll do something about it.

It takes a lot of guts to do it despite of the repercussions that they may get from other officers that will give them the evil eye for ratting out on one of their own.

These types of jobs, especially being a Jail Officer is being given out to peeps with just a simple HS degree with no college education. Some I know got hired that are HS dropouts and they were bullies.

This kind of hiring practices needs to stop. They need to start hiring 4-8 year college degree and bring back the Phys evals to all potential hires. Most especially the same with Police Officers.

The DOJ did away with all that in the 1990s in favor of affirmative action rather than what I mentioned above.

DOJ forces Police, Firefighters and Municipal Agencies to dumb down employment tests, practice reverse discrimination.

It does say, "Superiors said they learned of the problem after other officers came forward to report the assault."

:ty: for correction.

I've always thought some county have different names for police. For ie - in here, it's called "Police Department" and for Maricopa County - it's "Sheriff's Department".

but I also thought that the way it works - Police Department is a local level and Sheriff is a county level. but then... it varies among states and counties because some counties are very widespread and rural so they use sheriff instead of local police officers.

I think a sheriff's department deals with the entire county, while police is a city thing.

A 4-8 year college degree requirement? People with MAs and PhDs? I think they'd rather work in the private sector and earn more rather than deal with the lowest human elements on a day-to day basis.

generally...

City/Local Police = GED/HS diploma is the minimum requirement. The average starting salary is about $30,000/year

County/State Police = College degree. They do not generally deal with "common issues" that local cops deal with. They deal with court duties, prisoner transport, serving warrants, state crime, etc. The average starting salary could be $90,000/year. more or less.

Private Sector does not hire starters, only veterans. If they hire mostly starters, that's bad. It means that private company is a crook and I wouldn't be surprised if some of their employees were convicted felons.

Sheriffs are elected by county residents, and police chiefs are hired by the town/city.

I missed seeing the deputy restraining the out of line deputy. Is there a part 2?

Does someone need to be a law enforcement officer to have an opinion on this? If Jiro was a LEO, would you then require he work in Arizona?

It looks pretty rough here, but there is no way of knowing all the details by viewing this brief segment. Prison activities are rarely for the faint of heart.

I don't see anything outrageous..... *shrug* The guy is wearing a spit hood so obviously alot more happened than is on the clip

what mind? I've always been a critic of Maricopa County Sheriff.

yes, we all know that, because you think illegal immigrants are law abiding citizens and should not be deported or arrested.
