In California, a 13-year-old boy has flown his U.S. flag on the back of his bike to and from his middle school for a couple of months, in part to honor the military service of his grandfather. Honorable and proud thing to do. But according to his family, the school told Cody Alicea to remove the U.S. flag from his bicycle earlier this week, during Veterans week that is. The reason? Other students complained about the American flag. The horrors!

School Makes Boy Take American Flag Off Bike - KTXL

Scenario: Replace American flag with Venezuelan flag. Is it the same? Would we still take it away? How about Mexican Flag?

You're free to express your pride of your own country here. But what is the school afraid of? A U.S. flag waving on the back of a kid's bike in the United States? Maybe the boy had the audicity to show his patriotic pride as being greater that some of the students? Students of parents who are illegal aliens maybe? Who knows why complaints were lodged at the boy.

Obviously we're not getting the whole story here, but I still can't really see how this would be offensive...

Reminds me of the article from a few months back about the high school kid who was told to remove the two bigs flags on his truck.

And this U.S. flag wasn't even that big, either. That story isn't going to go away any time soon.

Good... it's ridiculous. What's wrong with a cute flag on a bike?!?!

Sure reads like one of those stories that are partially true, but has some important information withheld, in order to fire up the readers.
Personally, I think we can trace this to Liberals, Obama, and....

Al Gore!

Agreed. I'd like to know what's missing, but I still can't imagine that it would be justifiable.

This is quoted from the end of the article:

"After being contacted by FOX40 Friday morning, Denair's Superintendent says Cody will be allowed to keep the flag on his bike. He told FOX40 he and the school are patriotic, but their main priority is keeping students safe; the school will focus on the students who are causing uprisings. Riding a bike is still not allowed on school campus, but when Cody rides his bike to school he can now fly the flag."

Very interesting. So it's not about the flag at all. It's about some little brat wanting to ride his bike around campus when it is clearly a safety hazard and against the rules. Most college campuses don't allow bikes to be ridden on campus either.

Typical of FOX to completely distort this...

He was told to take down his U.S. flag off of his bike. But now, he can NOW fly the U.S. flag on his bike whenever he rides it to school. It was clearly about the flag.

I believe it was the final paragraph in the article. I am willing to bet that many people were already enraged by that point, and failed to read the end.

Oh, also, students can ride their bike to school, on campus. The issue was a perceived safety concern based on a few whiney students about the flag....not about the bike. That was confirmed and verified from the school superintendent in a video interview today from that same station. The kid can NOW ride his back to school (on campus, too) with his flag on it. Only because the school never figured it would generate so much outrage. Remember, he was riding his back with his U.S. flag on the back of it for nearly two months.

Not gonna argue nuts and bolts here. There may have been some comments about the flag, but the bigger issue appears to be his riding of the bike on school campus.

No. It was about the U.S. flag itself as a going concern for the kid's safety at school because of it. Not about riding his bike on campus. I already posted the confirmation that it's the flag that's the issue....not the bike.

I repeat...

You and I read the same article and came away with different impressions.

Carry on. *shrugs*
