Sailor: Discharged For Being Gay?

Using and possessing cell phones on military craft is very restricted. It's a privilege, not a right, and all military people know that their phones and the records are subject to search and confiscation. Those rules apply equally for all military people, straight or not.

Whatever illegal behavior is turned up from those phones can be used against the service members. That could include but not be limited to prohibited sexual behaviors, theft, espionage, exam cheating, dereliction of duty, falsifying a report, etc.

Prohibited sexual activity? So.....the military prohibits homosexual activity, even when it does not involve 2 members of the military?

yea that explains his desperate attempt to get back so he can get $$$ :roll:

If he joined Navy to get into college to be a productive citizen... then he should have been an ethical sailor and not bring the cellphone to submarine. What he did was reckless. stupidly reckless because he put the entire crew's lives at risk.

Do you think that he is the only one who has ever brought a cell phone into a restricted area? How did he put the crew's lives at risk?

I never said that the sailor's (he's not a soldier) boyfriend was in the military. Not all sexual activity is prohibited but certain sexual acts are illegal for military members to participate in whether they are straight or gay, and they can be charged with those offenses. It happens.

What acts might those be? So...the military prescribes the sexual activity of it's members? That is a bit extreme, don't you think?

Who said that other military people haven't been punished for bringing their phones into restricted areas? Do you think that every case gets publicized?

Obviously you don't know what things can potentially jeopardize the security of a military crew or craft or else you wouldn't even ask such a question.

the reason why cellphone is prohibited in submarine is because it's a serious security threat especially espionage.

1. it captures the photos/videos of classified material
2. it emits signals for enemy to track the sub/location
3. bunch more to list...

the commercial airline asks you to turn off the cellphone prior to departure. what would happen if you ignore them and continue to yap away on cellphone?

Our military is a volunteer service now. If people think those rules are too extreme for them then they don't need to join.

if he was discharged over trivial thing where most soldiers/sailors would get a slap on the wrist.... then it's definitely something we should look at.

but... in this case... no. Navy had a justifiable and legal reason to discharge him. What he did - it's definitely not a trivial matter. What a disgrace he is to Navy. What he's doing now is even more disgraceful by using gay excuse and media.

So, the military tells everyone up front that there are certain sexual activities that are not permitted, and provides a detailed list of those activities?

this applies to private companies too. and government agencies.

Fraternization is not a sexual activity. Reba stated that the military prohibited certain sexual activities even when another soldier (fraternization) was not an issue.
 
Jiro, are you missing the point? Given the facts, he was NOT fired for fraternization. He was fired only because he was gay. Would he be fired if it was a picture of his girlfriend/wife? It didn't say that his boyfriend was a shipmate or in military. If his bf is in military then the military would have a legal reason to fire him but that's not the case.. he was fired just because the military found out his homosexuality.

Article. If his boyfriend was a military personnel, it would have obviously been stated, as it was stated that he knew that he was taking his phone into a restricted error. Why would he admit to one violation and not the other?
