Using and possessing cell phones on military craft is very restricted. It's a privilege, not a right, and all military people know that their phones and the records are subject to search and confiscation. Those rules apply equally for all military people, straight or not.
Whatever illegal behavior is turned up from those phones can be used against the service members. That could include but not be limited to prohibited sexual behaviors, theft, espionage, exam cheating, dereliction of duty, falsifying a report, etc.
