I have read this thread and find the numbers totally bizarre. Where the heck do they come from???? I have met thousands upon thousands of deaf people and can truly say that the number of those who didn't know or use sign language number less than the fingers on my hands. Am I missing something???
I've always understood that the cultural, ASL-using segment of the whole is a minority. And I think it is because hearing people control destiny....

Guess I didn't look back far enough. My bad. But I'm still interested in where the numbers that 4 out of 5 deaf people don't know, or don't use, sign language comes from. I'd like to see how those numbers were arrived at and maybe the reasons for not using sign language.
