Wait, there was a recession?

;)

If the value of the American dollar goes up, is that a sign of the recession ending? If so, how do we find out that the value has gone up? Just curious.

Short answer is No.

There are several measures for valuing the Dollar.....Some use exchange rates. Comparing the dollar to other currencies. But given that the economy is global and this crisis is global, the currency of one nation is hardly a sign the recession is over especially when you consider this means another currency lost value at the same rate.

A rising dollar based on currency exchange rates would be a + and -. A more valuable dollar convinces our foreign creditors that our debt is worth holding. That's good but a neg at the same time because it allows us to borrow more which we should not be doing.

On the negative a more valuable dollar makes the cost of our goods higher which in turn slows exports which of course is bad.

What makes them think the recession is over? I mean, the dollar is worthless. Jobs are scarce. All of the illegal immigrants take whatever jobs there are. Businesses are still closing like crazy. More and more people are becoming homeless and needing assistance. Churches and food pantries cannot help everyone and are having to turn them away.

Wirelessly posted

If the recession is over because the GDP is the same, if not higher than, before the recession...

What would the GDP be like if unemployment diminishes?

Kinda like breaking you back in a car accident and saying everything is fixed once the car is repaired.

We need to go back on the gold standard. Silver is a steal at 20 an ounce and I am buying Silver Eagles. I could buy gold but I have a hunch silver will more than double in the next six months.

Saw some weird stuff yesterday. Saw a Mexican driving a German car with a bumper sticker made in China that said proud to be an American. I remember when the saying was buy American - Now the saying is Buy America. I'm also old enough to remember when penny candy was only a nickel. The new mantra of our elected officials should be "Support an American Corporation" - Buy products made in China.

Noted.

meh, I don't believe it that recession is over.

also, the college tuition is wayyyy too high!! Hell, how could the colleges raise tuition in times of recession? The tuition and loan bubble should burst eventually.

We had a discussion about that at work today. One of my coworkers is really into politics. She said that yes, the recession is over but the impact wont show for a while since the economy needs time to recover. She said it is based on more people spending which helps boost the economy but it is not awesome right now.

When you see her tomorrow ask her who is spending money....

There is not a whole lot of that going on right now. Well except for the government. :)

In that report, it said that job hiring always lag behind when recession is over.

Why would companies or businesses want to hire more people knowing that they'll soon get socked with health care costs, more taxes on their businesses and in general higher costs of everything else coming down the pike?

Thanks, Obama!

Recession is over?

:laugh2:

It seems politics and businesses are confused about the recession, seems their heads stuck underground like an Ostrich.

They are. Anything to try and look good for November. But they're failing miserably.

The recession ended in June 2009? I believe it. I'm just waiting for them to announce that a new one started in July 2009.

Warren Buffet: "We're Still In A Recession"

Reuters: Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said the U.S. economy remains in recession, disputing this week's assessment by a leading arbiter of economic activity that the downturn ended more than a year ago.

"We're still in a recession," Buffett told CNBC television in an interview broadcast on Thursday. "We're not gonna be out of it for a while, but we will get out."

Certainly not the kind of guy running around breathlessly with wild eyes exclaiming, "The recession is over! The recession is over! The recession is over!"
