Hey Bott

I know I have not been considered culturally deaf, but I am deaf. I am total deaf, but since I do not know enough ASL to have it be my language, I have not been considered Deaf. Right?

I advocate for the deaf, I try to be a part of the deaf community and I am learning ASL. That gets be closer to being Deaf, but not there quite yet. Am I right?

Its all about attitudes that counts for being culturally Deaf and be acceptable about it. yes.

Culturally Deaf people are those who are born deaf or became deafened early in life and rely primarily on sign language for communication.

Late deafened people are those who became deafened after acquiring language.

Not right by most standards. You are late deafened. The link here explains the hierarchy.

So, if it's about the attitudes, then I guess I can be considered culturally Deaf then? Thanks, I was hoping. I have been working hard to adopt a new thought process and such. Growing up, I never realized how "sheltered" I was regarding my hearing loss and the availabilities that were available. (does that makes sense?)

Nope

Weird definitions there.

Both oral... and culturally Deaf.

Mind-boggling.

Very mind boggling. According to that, a person who became profoundly deaf or even severely deaf after speech, then they will never be culturally Deaf.

right. You're not there yet because you are not quite involved with deaf activity. I know you're trying but keep on trucking!

Beside - don't worry too much about attaining Culturally Deaf status. it's not that big deal. Right now - what's important is you having a reliable mode of communication. then you can proceed onto whatever you like.

Yeah. I know some are tough but easier to adjust to being a culturally deaf anyway.

no but IMO - it's more like being involved with deaf community & deaf social events and knowing handful of deaf people.

Am I culturally deaf? no I don't think so because I wasn't "born n' raised" as a Deaf person. But the deaf community here accepts me and we hang out. That's good enough for me. :) If they accepted me as culturally deaf, cool beano.

well, it's you who decide to accept as a culturally deaf by making effort to be part of the deaf community. Thats my opinion.

Not what you said yesterday, about the people who you now have to accept.
