Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working

Thanks Jiro and Naisho!

I have a HP Laptop with Windows 7. I custom-built this one (after dropping a glass of wine on my previously-only-5-months old laptop hee hee I learned my lesson !!!) and it came pre-loaded with virtually nothing, which is exactly what i wanted. I've since installed CS4, Microsoft Office, and Norton. I think the bulk of my time on this laptop is spent on CS4, online (and that would be mostly Facebook and AD and youtube and a few other sites, I haven't had time to websurf much lately!). So on Facebook the Flash games are very slow these days, but I take that with a grain of salt as it could be THEIR games/servers. I do have the latest Flash Player - 10.1, I think? I store all my graphic design work onto my portable hard drive (which is usb-based) so I do plug that in and out a lot. I'm wireless so no router attached to this laptop, and I use a wireless Canon printer. I have the Windows and HP Updates turned on to do automatic updates. Does any of this info help?

60% users use IE means that IE operates better and users find it better than other browsers? Actually NO!

Many users are not as much computer knowledgeable aka novice users while many immediate and mere experts do now there are other browsers aka FF and Chrome. It's simply because, I assume, that since Windows do include IE so they (novice users) only know IE. I mentioned my friends (some) about FF yet they did not know its existence though more and more are picking up.

FF outperforms IE, period! Chrome is still "new" but believe it will improve over in time. Yes, IE8 improves but still is outperformed by FF and Chrome. cannot speak for other browsers like Safari since I never tried them. Top of all, one to each own is all.

there you go. You "assumed." In other way - you do not know if majority of IE users are novice users. In fact - quite a handful of my VERY computer-literate friends do use IE simply because they do not like being hassled with making Firefox/Chrome to work with many websites via add-ons.

Many websites with highest level of security (typically online banking or government sites) require you to use IE. It will not work with Firefox or Chrome. Bank of America just recently made its website compatible with Firefox and Chrome.

VERY! Rich info.

few suggestions -

1. Even with automatic updates turned on... it does not always install all updates because not all is a priority update. You should manually check the Windows Update and see what's on the list including "Optional Updates".

2. Since you said you installed Norton... that could be the culprit. Norton or other similar software like McAfee - it's tricky to configure with. Its constant monitoring can slow down the Internet and/or interfere with browser's functionality. Try disabling Norton and see how it goes.

3. About Flash - I use Chrome (or IE) for any flash-related contents because they can handle it fine but not Firefox. Firefox has a notorious memory leak issue so it will crash/slow down later on.

In bold, second here, I dislike Firefox because of this issue.

I dislike IE as well due personal reason.

Norton was probably the first thing I put on. I've had this laptop since Jan, maybe. It's only been a week that I've been getting this error. But I'll disable it and see. I'm thinking it's not that .. I'll keep playing around til I figure it out :)

Now that you mentioned Norton, shoots way up on the list.

Here's one way you can see if it is any kind of browser plugin or related:

Instead of using IE32, run IE in 64 mode and see if you get the crash. I'm assuming you are running 64bit.

Downside is you can't browse flash based content, but atleast you'll be able to narrow down the symptoms.

I do have 64-bit. How do I run IE in 64 mode?

we'll cross fingers for you :fingersx:

Can't miss it, right in the start menu programs by default.
Otherwise browse to IE folder in Program Files (not Program Files x86) and manually open iexplore.exe

I just installed Chrome. Started it up and closed it out 2x. NO ERROR MESSAGE !!! :)

It's not in my start menu programs. But I manually started it from Program Files just now. NO ERROR MESSAGE :)

So .. Was I using IE 32? I had been using the "e" icon on the desktop that was already there when I bought this laptop.

damn. me too. I didn't know there was IE 64-bits. So I've been using IE 32-bits all along.... ah well not a big deal

Click on Start, then click on all programs. Should show up on list as

Internet Explorer (64bit)

(That is how it is for me)

I just pinned it to my Start Menu. there we go.

Whoa interesting.. All installations I've done have had both 32 and 64 shortcuts available.. wonder what gives.

Anyway, yeah the 32bit ver is in the x86 folder, similar location. You can also tell by looking at the "about IE" option. Other way is when you meet any flash content it won't load for 64bit ver since there is none available.

I usually use 64 for loading sites that I don't want to load the crunk of plugins and get to the text.

So.. I dunno. Try seeing if 64 ever craps out on you. If it doesn't, it's likely something else installed that is working off IE32/FF, and this removes hardware or O/S from your list of potential culprits.

I have CS4. I use Illustrator and Photoshop and InDesign all the time. Used to use/have Quark but have since phased that out.

Then OSX already have them.

In fact, Macintosh have Adobe graphic since 1988. Windows finally have adobe since 1992.

Don't you noticed Adobe's help video are in OSX?

I just saw it like this:

IE -20%
----
FF +07%
Safari +1% something, hard to see
Chrome +3%
Opera +0%

20 - 11 = 9% is missing, that drop is larger than firefox's gain..
