My wife just had a muscle spasms that lasted about two days earlier this week. We do have some muscle relaxant pills for it (I think, the doctor that we have seems to act funny about it, so I dunno what he prescribed is actually muscle relaxants, if they are, they don't seem to be strong enough) but it doesn't seem to work.

When it hits, she's bawling her eyes out and I feel so helpless to be able to do anything about it but provide her comfort.

When she was 15, her left and only leg (she was born with one leg and her foot was malformed.) got amputated due to bone cancer. Since then, she's been getting muscle spasms that comes and goes.

I do have a hot water bottle to use, I heat up some water and fill it up. Then wrap it with a towel and place it directly under her stump leg. Then I get another towel and wrap the whole leg and bottle to trap the heat in.

It seems to help, but that's about as far as I can do to help her.

So What I am asking is suggestions for the future that the next time she gets it again, what remedies do you think will work or have had experience with remedies that you found that does work.

Appreciate any feedback that you may have,

Yiz

Have you tried massaging the muscle that is in spasm?

Have you thought of trying acupuncture treatments. I have a friend that was having horrible muscle spasms and acupuncture treatments was the only thing that helped her. My friend became an acupuncturist as she saw how it helped her. She was in horribe pain and said she was willing to let a monkey throw needles at her if she thought it would help. No monkey was needed. My daugther was getting horrible headache as child and I was not about load her up with pills at such a young , she when to an acupuncturist and she does not get horrible headaches any more . muscle spasms are really pain , sorry to hear you wife is in so much pain.

Have the doctor check her potassium level. Lack of potassium can cause muscle spasm as well. I am not sure of what is your wife's situation is, but here is an interesting link.

Calcium and Sodium also play an important role.

Yiz, Im so sorry about the misery and discomfort your wife is going through. I can only imagine the helplessness feeling you have.

Although I can tell you pretty much anything about the drugs her doctor is prescribing for her to treat this, I am not too well versed with alternative therapies for this. There are herbal supplements and such, but they can interfere with many medications her doctor likely has prescribed for her. You can PM me with any questions I may be able to help you with, or guide you to the right questions to ask her physician to assist with resolution of her suffering. Good Luck Yiz, again Im sorry your wife is suffering.

I've heard that magnesium can also play a role as well. I'm not sure the dosages of the minerals, though. I'd check back with your doctor for any questions you have regarding the use of vitamins/minerals that may help with her spasms.
