Hi, I'm trying to translate the song "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds, and I got stuck on the first line, "I don't get many things right the first time..."

I was thinking something like, MOST TIME I START WRONG

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?
Thanks!

I suggest you post an introduction of yourself in the appropriate thread before requesting help with your signing homework.

That being said, my next question would be, why are you "translating" the song into ASL?

Before you answer, I hope you have first viewed the video at Botts' post. :)

:ty:

Very thought provoking video.

Yes it is with the proviso that we all think music is cool, whatever, everywhere else but in a deaf studies classroom. I know this gal; she has been teaching Deaf Studies for about 20 years and I believe she also has a psychology degree.

That is what the video is about.

:ty: for posting the video, Bott, I also thought it was very thought-provoking, and important for me to see-

wow that's spot-on! It's exactly what I told my hearing friend who is learning ASL. This is what happened.

A couple months ago - I was invited for a small ASL club party at college in NYC (famous for deaf studies) and there's this hearing friend asking my deaf friend to help her sign the music for her ASL class. After observing my deaf friend teaching her and translating lyrics into ASL with futility... I interrupted them and said - "you know what? this is not right. you can't do like this. this music is for hearies so translating lyrics into ASL doesn't make any sense at all. Just by translating lyrics into ASL won't make any sense to us deafies."

Both my hearing and deaf friends were puzzled. So I continued to explain. I asked her - what is this music about? She said it's a sad music about love and blah blah blah. and then I said - "Good then convey to us in your own way in ASL. Express it!" (just like the beginning of Gally video).

I kinda have a beef about hearing students using ASL like it's a show performance. As that woman in youtube said - ASL is a language!
